Ostrichsitous

It took a little longer than I had wanted, but it's finally done: my model work bench is back in its proper place. And somewhere in the last few weeks, I came to have a cork board/bulletin board so I hung it up over my work bench and the first thing I mounted on it was a 2008 calendar that I received from Santa featuring aircraft from World War II.

SIDE NOTE: A quick look at my work bench shows the 1/48 scale A-4C Skyhawk model that my brother got me for my birthday a few years back, the 1/32 scale Bf109G-4 Tropical Messerschmitt that I also got for my most recent birthday, and the airbrush (also from my brother) that I'm hoping to test out this weekend....chores permitting.

Friday Evening Lessons

Due to a programming change on CBS I'll be expanding the education of my daughter in the finer points of being....geekish.

Why Mikey you ask....what method shall you be employing?

Quite simply, I'll be introducing her to the box-office-failure but absolutely-hilarious movie 1941. I figured that this is a slight expansion of her education into Star Trek (TOS), Monty Python, and Rush.

Yeah, it's Friday night and although my daughter will be 'learning'....she'll get a kick out of it.

Longer Life for HST

Something I saw over at LGF: the Hubble Space Telescope is getting some kick ass TLC this summer.

Hubble Overhaul to Boost Telescope's Reach

When astronauts overhaul the Hubble Space Telescope this summer, they will leave behind a vastly more powerful orbital observatory to scan the universe.

Set to launch aboard NASA's shuttle Atlantis on Aug. 7, the Hubble servicing mission will be the fifth - and final - sortie to upgrade the aging space telescope.

"We're not only going up to Hubble to refurbish it, but also to expand its grasp tremendously," said Alan Stern, associate administrator for NASA's science mission directorate, in a recent briefing. "We expect to make the very best discoveries of the entire two-decade plus Hubble program with the new instruments to be installed."

[....]

In addition to performing vital repairs, astronauts will add two new instruments to Hubble's observation platform Wide Field Camera-3 and the Cosmic Origins Spectrograph that will drastically boost its vision range.

"This refurbished Hubble [will be] a new telescope," said astronomer Sandra Faber of the University of California, Santa Cruz. "We estimate that at the end of this repair Hubble will be 90 times more powerful than when it was first launched."

That means that Hubble will be able to see at least 90 times more objects in deep space than it could when it was deployed in April 1990, she added.

With its ability to scan the universe at wavelengths ranging from the near-infrared, visible spectrum to the near-ultraviolet, the new Wide Field Camera-3 should allow Hubble to see objects that formed fewer than 800 million years after the beginning of the universe.

"To follow galaxy formation to times that are even earlier than this, we need a camera that can take sharp pictures efficiently at longer wavelengths," Faber said. "And that's exactly what Wide Field Camera-3 is going to do."

It's nice to see that something that wasn't expected to be useful after a few years is still chugging along.

Rain

(via PDA)

Today it's raining and God knows that San Diego could use it.

Hey Lord? Thank you very much for the rain but could you instill into the morons around here a smidgen of common sense about how to drive when the roads are WET!?

Amen.

It's Friday!

(via PDA)

Sitting in a coffee shop near the house that has free Wi-Fi and thought I'd post something. The trouble is that there isn't much to post about 'quickly'.

However, there is something that most would agree upon: it's Friday!!

I hope yawl have a great weekend...the Girl Scouts kick off their annual GS Cookie sales on Saturday, so I'll be helping the munchkin.

(SAN DIEGO READERS: If you'd like to order any, call me!!)

A Pleasant Reminder

I had a pleasant reminder from my wife, both yesterday evening and tonight when she walked in right before dinner.

The reminder was that January 15th was the two year anniversary of my brush with death.

Last night (Tuesday evening), she reminded me that it was this day two years ago when I had my stroke. I stopped doing whatever it was that I was doing at that moment, thought about it for a moment and said "Yeah....you're right". And then again this evening she did it again. She had just walked in the door from work and I was telling her that I'd be starting dinner in a few minutes (hot dogs and/or chili dawgs....I hadn't decided) and she turned to our daughter and asked her "where should we take Daddy to celebrate his anniversary?" As it turned out, we went to Olive Garden where I had my favorite Italian dish, chicken parmigiana. Ah....it was heaven.

So anyways....it's been two years.

It's a little hard to believe that it really happened, but I've got the titanium (I think they're titanium) screws in my head to prove it really did happen. (That's the one upside.....I get to tell people that I'm totally METAL!!!)

2008 Beginnings

Howdy all - just thought I'd post something quick since I have access to a computer tonight.

We survived the holidays and are starting to get 'acclimated' to the new year. We've taken down the Christmas tree (and took it to get mulched) and have practically all of the Christmas decorations taken down & boxed.

Tomorrow I'll be setting up my work table and resuming my work on models.

The kid is enjoying her time off from school and interestingly enough - she's looking forward to returning to school next week so she can see her friends.
