I'm currently reading 'The Da Vinci Code' by Dan Brown.
I had been wondering what all the.....commotion about the book was all about, so I decided to read it.
When I told my wife that I was thinking about buying the book, she immediately said YES, BUY IT! - it turns out that she wants to read it too so I'm plowing through it quickly when I go to dialysis.
I should be done with it by next week - I'll try to form a decent review of the book.....so far, it's interesting, specifically the interesting math/number facts involved in the history/back-story involving Da Vinci.
UPDATE: Just finished the book yesterday at dialysis.
Over all, I thought it was an entertaining novel; I especially liked the cryptological aspects of the story. Of course, it's the geek in me.
The ending of the story wasn't quite what I thought it would be, but it was still a 'page-turner'.
UPDATE II / ADDED TWIST: I was contacted by a reporter from the San Diego Union-Tribune - she wanted to interview me about what I thought of the book.
I'll keep my eyes open for the article and try to post a link to the article when it appears.....

Don't you libs have any real substantive things to say, other than the BushHitler/War For Oil/Lies mantra? It's getting old dude.... Go hug a tree already, and lose the anger. It's wasted here..

Wow....I'm impressed - you wrote that all in CAPS which means that you're M-A-D.
As for your ignorant questions, maybe you might want to READ.
Save us all the trouble and don't come back - you obviously have nothing of substance to say and you obviously aren't in a good situation if you're staying at a Motel 6 (you leave a digital footprint when you come around fool).
I'll leave your comment up as it is so that everyone can see what a fool you really are; I'll refrain from editing it to make it look like you really dig getting your freak on with puppies or sheep.

Dan Brown has a very good knowledge of medieval history. His knowledge of early church history...sucks.

All that aside, however, it's still a highly entertaining story.

Point is: the Catholic Church was weak until centuries after Christ. They couldn't have had as much pull as Brown claims. Not even close.

Oh yeah, I've seen this type of troll all over the net.
At first, you think that you *might* be able to have a discussion/debate with him/her/it, but they won't respond to civil discussion - they'll just keep typing in CAPS....ranting about non-related topics and you end up banning them.
Well, I decided to save myself some trouble: he banned.
Nathan: thanks for spoiling the book for everyone. Luckily, I'm a fast reader and was well into the book before I read your spoliers.
I'm going to edit those comments and you're more than welcome to post about it after I'm done reading the book.

This is one of the rare cases where I am going to wait for the movie before I read the book. It just seems the story seems more suited for the big screen than it does on rag.
I am more interested in the fact that is buried in the story than the ficiton. I mean Jesus was a very devout Jew and very steeped in tradition - most people do not understand this, in fact many Christians deny Jesus was Jewish at all. I tell them, besides the fact that he went to a rabbinical seminary and was highly respected as a young student and shortly thereafter as a rabbi by the elders, why do folks not think of Jesus as a Jew? But I digress, the fact that he was steeped in tradition makes it a very debatable point that he was in fact married and did in fact have children.
One theory is that mary magdalen was his most trusted apostle and not really his wife/girlfriend. The problem with this theory is that even as radical as Jesus was, it was still very much a culture of Men first women second. Jesus very much loved Mary and one of his philosophies children Jewish traditions was to allow the wife to be more involved in the relgious rituals (i.e. eating and drinking with the men, praying with the men, etc.) - much how the Catholic traditions are today (Catholic masses almost completely mirror Jeiwsh ceremonies other than the communion and what not and of cours,e allowing women to pray too) only recently, did the non orthodox Jewish rleigions allow women to pray along side of men.
Sorry for the big long paragraph, but these kinds of things fascinate me. Anyone who challenges the foundations of religions to the very core is something rare and very much welcomed as far as I am concerned.

How's by you, friend? I hope your toe is feeling better by now. As far as school...can you take classes online? I take some of mine online, and in fact, I'm taking 2 online this summer. It might work for you..you participate on your own schedule.

Classes online? Not at UCSD....at least, not in the engineering field. Maybe for COMM majors, but not for me. I'll probably be taking the summer off for two reasons:
(1) Summer classes are about $550 for one class and that assuming that there are any engineering classes available that I need.
(2) Mikey is in serious need of down-time this summer.

And yeah, I'm aware of Dubya's popularity.....it isn't so hot in my mind either. Never said the man was perfect - in fact, I'm guessing that there will be some changes come November and it's the GOP's fault for having some numbskulls in their party.

Pain
Too tired to really blog about anythingi in the news, but the one 'interesting' thing is that my left foot hurts.
Why?
Well, I had what's known as a 'partial matrix' performed on my foot yesterday. It would seem that while I was in my coma that my toenails on my big toes (in medical terms it's sometimes called the great toe) decided to become ingrown.
What prompted the semi-surgical procedure yesterday was that I had developed yet another infection and the doctors are busting their humps to keep me away from anything else that would complicate a kidney transplant.
So...part of the toenail was removed. And dispite taking Percocet that was prescribed for the neuropathy that's brought on by dialysis, it sucks to walk.....at least for the next week or so.
Oh well - at least it wasn't another stroke, right?
Sorry if I grossed anyone out, but it's the only thing happening right now. I'm still working on getting my strength back and I've returned to school; I'm taking one (and only one) class this quarter.
So far, school is going okay - I've got my first midterm a week from this Friday so I'll be studying over the weekend.
And when I'm not studying, I'm helping my wife with her just-started insurance business - mostly updating her policy holder's files, faxing stuff, etc.
Oh and I finally did get my bass into the shop to get adjusted and re-strung. Now I just have to get my amp out of storage and work out a time to practice without annoying the neighbors or the family.

In a blatant attempt to top you, I now relate this story:
One day I banged my big toe (right foot) real hard. I cussed a lot. I sat down hard. I cussed even more. Sometime later the toenail fell off of it's own accord. A new toenail grew to replace it.
A couple of weeks later that toenail fell off. It's replacement is behaving itself.
Hope the infection clears up quick, and your toenails stay where they belong.

Proud Banner Photos
The initial protesters setting up their 'Tents of Outrage'. That open spot between the tents and the tree (just out of the picture to the right) would be later filled by the tents of 'KLSD 1360 Air America Radio' and 'Activist San Diego' to occlude Protest Warrior from being seen.
The big-ass flatbed truck that's needed for....what was it again?
Oh yes - the obligitory 'Bush Lied' sign....the truck was used as a stage for the lame music that was played in between the various speakers venting their spleens.
And here's a shot of me after dealing with my messed up hair right before the protest began: Mikey sans hair
(I had to pretty much buzz off all of my hair since I left the hospital with what I referred to as a 'Flock of Seagulls look'....I'll post the 'before' photo as soon as I locate it on the computer.)
UPDATE: As promised (a little late though), here's the reason why I got that 'buzz cutt' last month.....the 'Flock of Seagulls' haircut that I had when I emerged from the hospital.
Ugh.....talk about bad hair days!

I'm Special!
Only here in California and in the minds of some twisted authors:
Talk about stupid....Every argument I've heard or read that's supposed to support gay rights always does the opposite: it brings unnecessary attention to gay/lesbian/transgendered/what the f*ck am I? groups.
Here at UCSD, there is a 'awareness day' event where people wear black t-shirts and will only communicate using statements written on index cards to bring 'attention' to the inner rage that they feel because they're made to feel different.
Different like when they constantly inject gay-gay-gay-gay-gay-gay-gay-gay-gay into society and then weep because society reminds them that they're different.
It's cliche, but there was a movie in the 80s - Pretty in Pink where the character played by Molly Ringwald complains that she's tired of being made to feel inferior because she's part of a clique at her school that's different than the other clique that's comprised of rich kids. The vice-principal that listens to her responds (and I'm paraphrasing here): "If you put out vibes that you don't want to belong....people will make sure that you don't". If these gay/lesbian/transgendered/what the f*ck am I? groups insist on making every person in the nation 134% aware that they're different (including dead people), then it's their problem when they complain that they're made to feel different.
It sort of reminds me of the dumb joke about a man that goes to see his doctor:
"Doctor, it hurts when I move my arm like this" and he starts waving his arm above his head.
The doctor responds "Then don't move your arm like that".
Here's a clue for those gay/lesbian/transgendered/what the f*ck am I? people: if you want to be considered 'normal' and just another part of society, then stop making a ruckus about being different.
Personally, I have no problems with these groups - I'm not gay, don't plan on being gay - I dig my wife too much. But if you insist on shoving gay-gay-gay-gay-gay-gay-gay-gay-gay in my face every three seconds....well, I'm gonna start to be annoyed with you and your 'message' and will start taking steps to keep you at arms length.
Honestly.....if you keep screaming 'I'm special! I'm special! I'm special!' at people.....they're gonna put you on the small school bus for the 'special' kids.
Enjoy the ride.

KLSD in Action
There was one 'memorable' incident from the March 18th whine fest - I was sort of, kind of interviewed by KLSD 1360 aka Air America Radio.
The gentlemen that shoved a microphone into my face first asked me if I was here in support of the 'pro-war' movement.
Read More of "KLSD in Action""Pro-war?" I replied. "No, I'm not here as part of the pro-war movement, but I am here to show support for our troops defending our freedoms."
"Huh" was the response that I got from the reporter. (I call him a 'reporter' because second-stage sound lacky with really hideous teeth is too long to repeat.)
He followed up by asking me 'had I heard about the recent report of American troops landing on the roof of an Iraqi house and they bound & gagged the people inside and then shot them all in the head, including the children'.
I just stood there for a few seconds trying to find a way to tell this clown that he's full of crap if he honestly believed it. The 'reporter' sensed my hesitation and added "Well, it might have been contractors that did it....".
This brought me out of my stupor and I instantly replied "That is the biggest crock of cricket crap I've ever heard and you're a complete moron if you honestly believe that United States troops would do something that hideous".
Before he could follow up with something just as stupid as his initial question, my father-in-law who was standing there with me jumped in and asked this clown "And just who are you with??". The reporter ignored him and pressed the point of the 'massacre' story: "Do you really think that American military would shoot Iraqi children in the head?".
Again, my father-in-law asked him who he worked for - and this time, the reporter slinked away looking for someone else to annoy; unfortunately, he walked over and started questioning some of the other Protest Warriors. From what I saw, he didn't get much milage out of them either and ended up asking another pointed question and immediately stepped back a few feet to start answering the question for himself (as if there wasn't anyone there to respond).
Afterwards, I was wondering just where on Earth did this dork get such a story.....well, I found it at one of the internet's cessepools - Aztlan.net
And there you have it - consider the source of this *report* and consider the ability of Air America to try and get a violent response as a sound bite and you have the basic premise of the anti-war/anti-American establishment.Ugh....I'll have to take a shower after going to that website.
All done with "KLSD in Action"?

Today was the first day of the spring quarter and also my return to school since getting sidelined by the stroke almost three months ago.

For now it's a presence I acknowledge and accept. And having accepted it I can go on. The pain is not me, and there shall come a day when the pain will be gone and I shall remain.
Take care of yourself and appreciate your wife. For good friends are a refuge in troubling times.
|| Posted by Alan Kellogg, April 3, 2006 01:59 AM ||Hey there Mikey (and Mrs. and Mini-Mikey)
We missed you, but there was no need for explanation :) Mrs. Mikey filled me in on what happened after we parted on Sat evening. She sounded tired but quite relieved! Saw Mrs. Mikey's kinfolk at the OTY though and it was GREAT to have them! They didja proud!!
Take care of you...
Quack.

Have your people call my people with an update.
|| Posted by Da Goddess, April 3, 2006 04:55 PM ||Wait, am I Goddess or Mikey's people? I thought I was only Mrs. Smash's people? Does this even involve me? I'm so confused...
