This has got to be the biggest piece of evidence that hypocrisy exists south of the U.S. border......
Yes - there's some merit to Mexico bitching about being 'violated', but given the big picture that's been in plain view over the last 50 years, it's just as laughable as when anti-border wack-jobs completely ignore the policy of the Mexican government concerning illegals crossing their southern border.

As you know me, I am hardly a conservative, but I don't understand what the argument is against having a real physical border and much more beefed up border patrol. I mean, Mexico would benefit from legal border crossings just as the USA would benefit from legal mexicans workin in this country - we would have the workforce for the more "menial" jobs and the money made by those workers get sent back to mexico. All the while, these documented workers paying into the system we all have to pay into.
As for the Mexican government complaining about these workers building these fences, we all know it is really about....
|| Posted by nunya, February 26, 2007 07:01 PM ||They can shove the "incurrsion" up their asses. Until they start stopping the flood of illegals into our country, they've got nothing whatsoever to talk about.
|| Posted by The Other Mike S, February 28, 2007 03:45 PM ||Hey there Mikey,
I just heard from Margret Leslie that Jackie Laule passed away. I've known about her battle with cancer for some time now, but it still came as a shock to me. She leaves behind a 15 year old son. What really shocks me is the fact that this is the second child that her parents have lost.

Geez...that just sucks.
It's stuff like this that make my problem(s) seem silly in comparison....dialysis and money problems pale in comparison.
Love and good Karma back at you & your family!!

Lovely Times
Well, other than having some leg cramps from dialysis this morning my day was going fairly well. Short day at school, no physics homework, and history was....well, history.
And then my wife called me.
Read More of "Lovely Times"I know that I previously posted that one of my goals for the coming year was to stop bitching and complaining and now I'm about to violate that goal.
For the last several months, the family budget has more and more been operating in the negative. We've fallen behind in our rent and luckily, the university (they're the landlords as we live in UCSD housing) has been allowing us to play 'catch up' on the back rent providing that we're not late with it again. My wife called me to tell me that she talked to the apartment management and that we're basically got until the middle of next week to cough up all of the back rent....all $3800 worth.
Now, why am I posting about such lovely news?
Well, I have to come to the blogsphere, hat in hand, to ask for help. If anyone can donate anything, I would be very thankful. Anything at all.
I have trouble asking because well.....I'm basically supposed to pull myself up by my own bootstraps. Normally, I have - several times, in fact, but being as sick as I am these days I face a huge Catch-22.
While I'm not restricted to a wheelchair or a hospital bed, I still can't work because of the severe fatigue I deal with. And the Catch-22 here is that if I could get a job, any prospective employer wouldn't hire me because I'd be a 'medical liability' and wouldn't be able to contribute 100% to my job; Geez, I face this even after I graduate from UCSD and can call myself an engineer....at least, I'll face this until I get a transplant.
I have to ask anyone/everyone for a little help and can honestly tell you that my family isn't living 'high-on-the-hog' lately - we've cut out every non-essential 'luxury' just to save money. As I posted last night, I brought my kid up to school to let her use the Internet for a homework assignment.
It's days like this that make me want to just go home and crawl into bed for a week.
Thanks for listening.

This is off topic, but I got tagged into a silly blog game and decided to accept. Now it's your turn.
The rules are:
"Each player of this game starts with the 6 weird things about you. People who get tagged need to write a blog of their own 6 weird things as well as state this rule clearly. In the end, you need to choose 6 people to be tagged and list their names. Don't forget to leave a comment that says you are tagged in their comments and tell them to read your blog."
Here’s my post:

Lost IQ Points
From a link found at LGF, I watched this segment of 'Hannity & Colmes' from last night (remember, I don't have cable television). And it was over seven minutes of this Imam not answering any questions with a simple answer.
Unfortunately, I think I lost several IQ points because I watched it all the way through....

Rest in Peace Anna.
SIDENOTE: I'm up here at UCSD with my daughter so that she can use the Internet here to do research on a science homework project; she has to look up stuff about influenza.
She finished it quite quickly and is now busy playing the on-line version of 'Who Wants to be a Millionaire'....and she's kicking butt doing it.

So a couple who was, say, infertile, could not marry? A couple that is past child bearing age could not marry? A couple that CHOOSES not to have children for personal reasons, or the fact that they simply don't want kids, could not marry? PLEASE. We need LESS government, not more. Having a child is a very personal decision...the government kind of doesn't have a say. This ticks me off.
|| Posted by Gracie, February 7, 2007 07:31 PM ||To impute to those who oppose same-sex marriage the argument that “gays can’t reproduce” as a reason that they should not be able to marry (i.e., the purpose, or one of the primary purposes, of marriage is to produce children, and since gays can’t reproduce they don’t qualify) is merely a distortion of their arguments. The only people making this “absurd and flawed” argument are the SUPPORTERS of same-sex marriage, such as The Washington Defense of Marriage Alliance. I’ve never seen those who oppose same-sex marriage make this argument. That is, this is a classic strawman argument.
Marriage relates courtship and spousal selection to reproduction precisely because the FACT of human reproduction implicates the political necessity that is the ORDERLY perpetuation of the nation and society.
Because reproduction is a FACT and will have important and inevitable consequences on society both good and bad, the mechanisms of marriage and family law seek to regulate the selection of spouses and stabilize the relationship once the selection is made because of the POTENTIAL OF MEN AND WOMEN TOGETHER TO CREATE SOCIAL DISORDER when they do reproduce.
Same-sex relationships have NOTHING AT ALL to do with either the natural, biological purpose of spouse selection or the political purpose of it as well. Sexual relations between members of the same sex and the relationships that might derive from these have at best a NEUTRAL EFFECT on society in the best of times, and a negative effect when population declines menace a nation. Therefore, it would be IRRATIONAL to confer the status of marriage upon a relationship that is forever separated from the purpose for which it is intended.
The state purpose of marriage is to bring ORDER to the particular human activity that is procreation, not to mandate it.

Lovely Mutawas
The unwritten rule concerning westerners and their parties was basically this: we kept our partying inside the walled compounds where we lived and the Saudi police would stay out of the compounds. The same unwritten rule also applied to the mutawas (moo-taw-was) who are the 'Religious Police' that patrol the cities looking for crimes against Islam being perpetrated; these fun folks work for the Committee to Prevent Vice and Promote Virtue.
When dealing with either of these groups of 'law enforcement', I cannot remember ever hearing of any westerners being busted for partying. And believe me, those parties definitely involved alcohol and other 'substances'. The one thing that kept this 'truce' well in hand was that everyone that every attended any parties would keep an eye out for some stupid jerk who wanted to go for a drive or wanted to go outside the compounds for dinner while hammered.
What this article didn't say and I'm almost willing to be hard cash on is that these 20 foreigners were most likely people from the Philippines. (The Filipinos that I knew threw some big-ass parties.)
Considering what I saw with the Saudis and how they treated anyone that wasn't from Saudi Arabia (or a Muslim for that matter), I'm almost certain that they busted a Filipino party and are making an 'example' out of them to show that they're in charge.
Here's someone else's observations on the Mutawas.

Research Project
I'm starting to prepare for my 'Final Exam' paper in Physics and wanted some feedback on the possible topic: interstellar travel.
I'm taking this Physics course because it's cool (in a geeky sort of way) and just like the last Physics course I took (with the same prof) I was slightly more interested in the application(s) of what I learned as compared to the pure scientific research possibilities. In this case, it's more along the lines of how could a possible expedition to another star system be done?
While politely ignoring Star Trek and the possibility of warp drive (going faster than the speed of light), what method/technology could be pursued to propel the spacecraft to the destination as close to the speed of light as possible?
I started (briefly) hitting the Internet for proposed spacecraft engine systems and I'll have to sort out what's possible versus what's pure crap.
Anyone follow this type of stuff as a hobby and/or interest? I'd love to get pointed towards materials that might shed more light (no pun intended) on this.
And for anyone who'd think that this is stupid and that being a geek is the ultimate low in human existance....just remember: you're reading this thanks to a few geeks.
UPDATE: First, I'd like to thank Mike H. for leaving me a link about some projects that are being kicked around at NASA. I had looked at them previously and wasn't too sure about using them.
As for this update, I'm now sitting on the fence about the topic of my research paper. Initially, I was thinking about interstellar travel (as I initially posted here) , but now I'm toying with the topic being time travel and what are the possibilities of achieving it.
So far, there's lots of materials on the subject here in the UCSD Geisel library, but I have to sort through it all to see if there's anything I can use that doesn't require an advanced degree in mathematics to understand it all.
Honesty, it seems like a 'cool' subject to research.....I just have to boil it down for the common person to understand it what with writing a paper on it.
More later this week as I make a final decision on the topic.
