Audacity to Complain

This has got to be the biggest piece of evidence that hypocrisy exists south of the U.S. border......

Yes - there's some merit to Mexico bitching about being 'violated', but given the big picture that's been in plain view over the last 50 years, it's just as laughable as when anti-border wack-jobs completely ignore the policy of the Mexican government concerning illegals crossing their southern border.

Lovely Times

Well, other than having some leg cramps from dialysis this morning my day was going fairly well. Short day at school, no physics homework, and history was....well, history.

And then my wife called me.

Lost IQ Points

From a link found at LGF, I watched this segment of 'Hannity & Colmes' from last night (remember, I don't have cable television). And it was over seven minutes of this Imam not answering any questions with a simple answer.

Unfortunately, I think I lost several IQ points because I watched it all the way through....

Retired Navy

My old navy buddy - Timekeeper - is officially retired from the United States Navy!

Congratulations sir!!

Makes me wish that I had stayed in but I would have ended up retiring medically after only 14 years.

Anna Nicole Smith Dead

Anna Nicole Smith dies at 39

MIAMI (Reuters) - Former Playboy Playmate and billionaire's widow Anna Nicole Smith has died at the age of 39 after apparently collapsing in a Florida hotel room, her lawyer said on Thursday.

"I can confirm that she is deceased. It's as shocking to me as to you guys," Smith's attorney, Ronald Rale, told Reuters. "I don't know anything further. (Her lawyer and husband) Howard (K. Stern) obviously is speechless and grieving.

Smith was found in her hotel room and given CPR by Seminole tribal fire rescue and Hollywood fire rescue workers, said Michael Bloom, president of the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Hollywood, Florida.

Smith's nurse called hotel workers at the hotel at 1:38 p.m. and security went to the hotel room, hotel officials said. Fire rescue workers from both the Seminole Indian tribe and from Hollywood arrived minutes later and Smith was taken to Memorial Regional Hospital in Hollywood at 2:10 p.m.

As screwed up/goofy her life was, it's a shame it was cut short.

Rest in Peace Anna.

SIDENOTE: I'm up here at UCSD with my daughter so that she can use the Internet here to do research on a science homework project; she has to look up stuff about influenza.

She finished it quite quickly and is now busy playing the on-line version of 'Who Wants to be a Millionaire'....and she's kicking butt doing it.

Collegiate Socialism

University of California, San Diego slips a little more down the slope to socialism:

Students Vote in Droves to Pass Fee Ballot

The stress and tension of last week's special election came to an end Feb. 2 with the announcement of the record-breaking passage of the athletics fee referendum that boasted the highest voter turnout in the student government's history.

Students passed the $78 intercollegiate athletics fee increase 4,991 to 3,948, with approximately 9,000 student voters amounting to a striking 41.9-percent turnout on a campus historically plagued by student apathy.

Great.....just great.

Now I have to pay more money for UCSD jocks to feel important about being jocks.

Spazzing Out

Every so often you encounter someone who is.....obsessed with a particular game.

Some people silently ask themselves just what is this person's problem!?! and then forget about it and get on with their lives.

Here's one German kid that spends way too much time on the computer and maybe needs some pharmaceutical help.

(P.S. - If you've seen this elsewhere then.....well, good for you.)

Bozos

You're joking....right?

Washington initiative would require married couples to have kids

OLYMPIA, Wash. - An initiative filed by proponents of same-sex marriage would require heterosexual couples to have kids within three years or else have their marriage annulled.

Initiative 957 was filed by the Washington Defense of Marriage Alliance. That group was formed last summer after the state Supreme Court upheld Washington's ban on same-sex marriage.

Under the initiative, marriage would be limited to men and women who are able to have children. Couples would be required to prove they can have children in order to get a marriage license, and if they did not have children within three years, their marriage would be subject to annulment.

All other marriages would be defined as "unrecognized" and people in those marriages would be ineligible to receive any marriage benefits.

Another move to make gay-marriage proponents look like complete morons. It's silly crap like this that makes me wonder how the human race survived for this long.

Lovely Mutawas

20 face lash for dancing in Saudi Arabia

RIYADH, Saudi Arabia - A Saudi Arabian judge sentenced 20 foreigners to receive lashes and spend several months in prison after convicting them of attending a party where alcohol was served and men and women danced, a newspaper reported Sunday.

The defendants were among 433 foreigners, including some 240 women, arrested by the kingdom's religious police for attending the party in Jiddah, the state-guided newspaper Okaz said. It did not identify the foreigners, give their nationalities or say when the party took place.

Judge Saud al-Boushi sentenced the 20 to prison terms of three to four months and ordered them to receive an unspecified number of lashes, the newspaper said. They have the right to appeal, it added.

The prosecutor general charged the 20 with "drinking, arranging for impudent party, mixed dancing and shooting a video for the party," Okaz said.

The paper said the rest of those arrested were awaiting trial.

Saudi Arabia follows a strict interpretation of Islam under which it bans alcohol and meetings between unrelated men and women.

The religious police, a force resented by many Saudis for interfering in personal lives, enjoys wide powers. Its officers roam malls, markets, universities and other public places looking for such infractions as unrelated men and women mingling, men skipping Islam's five daily prayers and women with strands of hair showing from under their veil.

In May, the Interior Ministry restricted the powers of the religious police to just arresting suspects, because the police sometimes had held people incommunicado and insisted on taking part in ensuing investigations.

The reason I'm posting this is because when I lived in Saudi Arabia (1992 - 94), this was something that we 'westerners' didn't really worry about. At least, we didn't worry about it too much in the Eastern Province where I lived.

The unwritten rule concerning westerners and their parties was basically this: we kept our partying inside the walled compounds where we lived and the Saudi police would stay out of the compounds. The same unwritten rule also applied to the mutawas (moo-taw-was) who are the 'Religious Police' that patrol the cities looking for crimes against Islam being perpetrated; these fun folks work for the Committee to Prevent Vice and Promote Virtue.

When dealing with either of these groups of 'law enforcement', I cannot remember ever hearing of any westerners being busted for partying. And believe me, those parties definitely involved alcohol and other 'substances'. The one thing that kept this 'truce' well in hand was that everyone that every attended any parties would keep an eye out for some stupid jerk who wanted to go for a drive or wanted to go outside the compounds for dinner while hammered.

What this article didn't say and I'm almost willing to be hard cash on is that these 20 foreigners were most likely people from the Philippines. (The Filipinos that I knew threw some big-ass parties.)

Considering what I saw with the Saudis and how they treated anyone that wasn't from Saudi Arabia (or a Muslim for that matter), I'm almost certain that they busted a Filipino party and are making an 'example' out of them to show that they're in charge.

Here's someone else's observations on the Mutawas.

Research Project

I'm starting to prepare for my 'Final Exam' paper in Physics and wanted some feedback on the possible topic: interstellar travel.

I'm taking this Physics course because it's cool (in a geeky sort of way) and just like the last Physics course I took (with the same prof) I was slightly more interested in the application(s) of what I learned as compared to the pure scientific research possibilities. In this case, it's more along the lines of how could a possible expedition to another star system be done?

While politely ignoring Star Trek and the possibility of warp drive (going faster than the speed of light), what method/technology could be pursued to propel the spacecraft to the destination as close to the speed of light as possible?

I started (briefly) hitting the Internet for proposed spacecraft engine systems and I'll have to sort out what's possible versus what's pure crap.

Anyone follow this type of stuff as a hobby and/or interest? I'd love to get pointed towards materials that might shed more light (no pun intended) on this.

And for anyone who'd think that this is stupid and that being a geek is the ultimate low in human existance....just remember: you're reading this thanks to a few geeks.

UPDATE: First, I'd like to thank Mike H. for leaving me a link about some projects that are being kicked around at NASA. I had looked at them previously and wasn't too sure about using them.

As for this update, I'm now sitting on the fence about the topic of my research paper. Initially, I was thinking about interstellar travel (as I initially posted here) , but now I'm toying with the topic being time travel and what are the possibilities of achieving it.

So far, there's lots of materials on the subject here in the UCSD Geisel library, but I have to sort through it all to see if there's anything I can use that doesn't require an advanced degree in mathematics to understand it all.

Honesty, it seems like a 'cool' subject to research.....I just have to boil it down for the common person to understand it what with writing a paper on it.

More later this week as I make a final decision on the topic.

Funnier Side to Dialysis

My Nephrologist told me about these cartoons when I mentioned possibly writing a book about being sick.

(Cartoon politely glommed from Global Dialysis)

The humor in this cartoon might be lost on some people......just consider why I was in the hospital recently.
