A Turning Point Today

While today will be yet another ho-hum day for most people, it's significant to me.

Today, I turned 40.

Crap.....freakin 40. Forty!!! OMG!

My insurance rates are cheaper now.

UPDATE: One of the gifts that my wife and daughter got for me is something that I honestly have been wanting to get since around 1982: all three seasons of the original Star Trek series!!

Boo-Freakin-YAH!!

Getting Hot

Big fun in San Diego:

More Than 346,000 Homes Evacuated in San Diego County

SAN DIEGO — More than 346,000 homes in San Diego have been ordered evacuated after a dozen wildfires displaced more than a half million people in Southern California, destroying hundreds of homes and businesses and forcing federal officials to assist firefighting efforts.

In San Diego County alone, 513,000 people have evacuated, said county spokesman Luis Monteagudo.

By day three, the fires had burned at least 245,957 acres, or 384 square miles — an area larger than New York City. Tuesday's forecast called for hotter temperatures and more explosive Santa Ana gusts.

And that's a record for San Diego: 513,000 people displaced. Over one half of a million people. That is a big-ass number!

It's kind of weird here at my house - there is hardly no people out of their houses....no one walking their dogs, no joggers. Granted, I live on sort of a cul-de-sac that doesn't have a lot of traffic even when there aren't fires, but it's still weird.

My daughter's school was cancelled yesterday and today and I just now heard that it's closed for the rest of the week. Needless to say, she's thrilled about it!! (Now maybe I can get her to clean her room.....) UC San Diego was also closed Monday and today; whether or not there will be any classes in the rest of the week will probably be announced this afternoon; I can't see them actually having classes this week since a huge chunk of the students commute from other parts of the county.....too many people might be cut off and it would probably be best if they just said 'screw it' for the week.

We have some friends of ours that had to evacuate their houses up in Poway and their staying with us; the wife and daughter are with us now and the husband was activated along with the rest of his National Guard military police unit to assist with the emergency here in San Diego.

I don't see the fire getting anywhere near us, but we've got a pile of bags and stuff ready to be thrown into the back of my truck and off we'll go if it comes to it.

Gore Wins a Nobel

Some mornings when I first wake up and get out of bed I'm able to get it together and some mornings I can't.

When I first heard this on Good Morning America this morning....well, I thought maybe I should really go back to bed cause I couldn't believe this when I heard it. And when I got done with dialysis this morning and heard it again on the radio....I knew it wasn't an extended nightmare:

Gore and U.N. Panel Win Peace Prize for Climate Work

OSLO, Oct. 12 — Former Vice President Al Gore, who emerged from his loss in the muddled 2000 presidential election to devote himself to his passion as an environmental crusader, was awarded the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize on Friday, sharing it with the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, a United Nations network of scientists.

The Norwegian Nobel Committee praised both “for their efforts to build up and disseminate greater knowledge about man-made climate change.”

The prize is a vindication for Mr. Gore, whose cautionary film about the consequences of climate change, “An Inconvenient Truth,” won the 2007 Academy Award for best documentary, even as conservatives in the United States denounced it as alarmist and exaggerated.

“I will accept this award on behalf of all the people that have been working so long and so hard to try to get the message out about this planetary emergency,” Mr. Gore said Friday in Palo Alto, Calif., standing with his wife, Tipper, and four members of the United Nations climate panel. “I’m going back to work right now,” he said.

Gore 'winning' the Nobel Prize cheapens it for those that win it for serious issues.

Oh....and what do you bet that he'll be flying that Gulfstream jet and burning lots of JP5 to accept the award?

Slackin Lately

If anyone has tried to e-mail me lately (at the madmikey address) and hasn't gotten a reply, it's because I've been slacking lately.

Hey....everyone has those periods of time where they basically blow off everything and it's more-or-less that time for me.
