It happened again: halfway through dialysis on Monday, I woke up with what I call a 'skreeetchhing headache' (read migraine) and the urge to power puke. And with no dialysis techs or nurses around, I grab the every handy-dandy trashcan next to my chair and start honking my brains out.
The tech that hooked my up two hours earlier runs over and gets the dialysis machine to take a BP reading and whadda-ya-know: my BP is something like 270/148, which is well into stroke region.

Long story short: I get transported to Scripps Memorial (about a mile from my house) and get admitted. The ER personnel pumped me up intravenously with Hyrdralazine (a BP med), another med to combat the nausea, and finally a dosage of Dilaudid to keep my skull from cracking open from the headache. They then moved my up to the ICU for observation for a day and then moved me to the regular hospital wing to ensure that their treatment not only works, but stays working.
And here it is Thursday morning and I'm released. The parting words of the nephrologist is that these meds (both pumped into me and prescribed to me) are the 'gamut' of the BP arsenal of drugs and that the next step might involve removing my close to non-working kidneys as they might be the cause of the blood pressure 'spikes' I've been having lately. I'm not thrilled with this move, but if it keeps my pressure normal, then I guess it is what is next. (After having the craniotomy following my stroke, I'm not thrilled with surgery.)
So, I'm back at home and resting well.
BTW, for my friends that are upset that they weren't informed of this recent hospitalization, do not take it personally; if the wife picked up the phone to let everyone know about every little blip on the medical radar, you'd soon get tired of seeing my phone number pop up on your caller ID. Trust me, if there was something major happening with me, you'll all hear about it ASAP.
So for now, the wife and I will be watching some movies that we normally do now watch with the kid in the house (no, none of those types); the kid gets back from a YMCA summer camp tomorrow where she was learning to surf.
That's about it for now. If anything pops up worth noting, I'll be blogging about it.

I'm glad you were admitted BEFORE the stroke, but truly wish you didn't have to endure this shit all the time. I worry.
I'm gonna go see if my ex is a match for you and then personally remove a kidney on your behalf.

Blogging, BP, and Paine
I got a call from a friend today. He was calling to see if I was in the hospital again because of the severe lack of blogging.
Sorry about that Bob! Just haven't been 'in the mood' to blog - I'm still battling with my blood pressure and it's tendency to spike high enough to where my wife takes me to the ER. So far.....it's okay. I just have to watch it like a hawk.
In the meantime, here's something that Bob passed along to me that....well, it says a lot about what's happening to American culture and the American nation.
Give it a watch.

Wouldn't it be nice if people actually just used their brains for a change? Instead of philosophizing and proselytizing, they could apply real common sense to their actions and decisions. Ah, but that's asking too much. Too, too much.
Keep working on that BP, Mikey. Gimme a call if you're bored. I'm not too far away, you know.
|| Posted by Da Goddess, August 14, 2008 01:56 AM ||and P.S. did you ever go down to apply for social services? I mean, did you have to go there to apply for medical assistance or did they do it in hospital? Anyway, if you walk into the building (what is it? on Ronson?), you have to scan 47 languages to find English and then you have to locate the one English speaking clerk, make an appointment to speak to him/her, and then you have to fill out the stack of papers. If you don't speak English, someone will help you fill them out (or better still, fill them out for you). While it takes an English speaking citizen 4 hours to get through the process, it only takes about an hour for someone speaking any of the other 46 languages listed.
|| Posted by Da Goddess, August 14, 2008 02:01 AM ||DG - that stuff is already taken care of....I'm covered more or less. But thanks for asking.
|| Posted by Mad Mikey, August 14, 2008 11:12 PM ||No, I know you're covered. I meant, did you have to go down there to do it? Cuz if you had, you'd know that it's a joke for anyone who speaks English and English only. We're fucked in that regard.
|| Posted by Da Goddess, August 17, 2008 06:28 AM ||That's OK, Mikey!! Health first...Saving the world through blogging..second. Glad you liked the clip. Conservativism at it's best. Feel better!!
|| Posted by sturgesbob, August 17, 2008 06:05 PM ||I think you don't get. We have States, we have Federales. Look man - we're all Americans and we all have to play by the American rules. But at the same time, we have to accommodate those who make us up. FInd me a nation prior to the U.S. that had a population as large as our and enjoyed the freedoms we have. Clearly, we're doing something right.
This guy is an asshat masquerading as a patriot. We need to quit pretending that we live under one rule and legislating the shit out of everything, and let the Feds do their thing, and the states do theres.
And multiculturalism? It feeds the juggernaut that is the U.S. Blacks, whites, hispanics, asians, straights, gays, we run the gamut - we all get to be Americans. But if you say "you have to give up all the history that landed you here" you gotta play fair - get rid of white culture too - and what will you get? America, the corporation. Else it's whites versus everyone, and you make enemies of your own countrymen.
I'd rather have Chinese New Year, thanks. And Christmas, Cinco de Mayo, Halloween and all that multicultural shit that makes your freedoms fun to exercise.
Don't fall for this B.S. He mixes a little grain of truth here and there to make it seem credible, but it's not. It's leading you down the road of bigotry.
|| Posted by Captain America, August 20, 2008 07:21 AM ||Which is more inconvenient: press 1 for English, or wait for the non english speaker who got to the ATM before you work it out?
|| Posted by Ohmygosh, August 20, 2008 04:10 PM ||'Captain America' and 'Ohmygosh': you both need to up the medications if you're going to instantly dismiss this as give-up-your-liberty-so-we-can-fix-this-mess.
