Resurrection

Deaf Gods of BabylonI was digging through my glove box the other day and I found a tape that I hadn't listened to for quite a while. I popped it into the radio and cranked it up, much to the chagrin of my daughter. It brought back memories of being just out of the Navy, single, and the prospect of starting a bank & playing in bars.

Ahh, fond memories.

The band in question is Lord Tracy. I had never heard of them until my good friend Bob and I went to the old Bacchanal in Kearny Mesa to see Ace Frehley in concert - Lord Tracy opened for them. Even though I had not heard their material before that night, I had a blast watching them, especially their bassist, Kinley Wolfe aka Barney; the man played with a touch that is only rivaled by Billy Sheehan. If you don't know who Billy is, then it'll be hard to explain just what a monster bass player he is and what a trip it is to see him play.

I decided to check the Internet and see if Lord Tracy was still around - they are. I'll be getting a CD to replace my worn-out tape as time/money permit and I'll be keeping an eye out to see if they'll be coming to San Diego. This is one band that I definitely want to see again.

RNC - Day One

John McCain - Rudy GulianiThanks for C-SPAN, I was able to watch some of the Republican National Convention Speeches after getting home from school last night. Even though I was dog-tired, I stayed up to catch the end of John McCain's speech and to listen to former New York City Mayor Rudy Guliani talk.

I liked what McCain had to say even if he said it in his soft spoken voice and especially when he slammed Michael Moore and the crowd roared with approval.

And I loved Rudy's speech - he really sounded like he was just 'talking' to you instead of pontificating in front of an audience. I'm really hoping he considers a run for the White House in 2008 - that would be something.

I Love that Sound

One sunny day in 2005, an old man approached the White House from across Pennsylvania Avenue, where he'd been sitting on a park bench. He spoke to the Marine standing guard and said, "I would like to go in and meet with President Kerry."

Hypocriticism

Yesterday was laundry day, which means that I'm jumping up every 33 minutes to go out and switch the loads of clothes. In between, I was vegging out and flipping channels - C-SPAN...Sci Fi Channel...FoxNews....Food Network (my wife set the 'Favorites' on this one)....C-SPAN. I don't recall which channel it was on, but there was one commercial that got me thinking about something.

The commercial was about consumer protection on your credit card(s). The actor was saying "I got a call from my credit card company asking if I had purchased two surfboards in Redondo Beach. I said NO!!".

What puzzled me was this:

People aren't getting all foaming-at-the-mouth about Citibank or Bank of America or whoever monitoring your credit card purchases and noting 'peculiar purchases' but they are getting rabid about the government possibly using library records to see who checks out 'Bomb Making for Dummies'.

What's up with that?

At least the government is trying to keep Americans safe whereas the credit card company is trying to reduce it's net losses from credit card fraud.

It just stymies me - people get really nervous about the government doing it's job yet don't bat an eye when the private sector does the same task.

Ugghhhh - go figure.....

Cathartic Moment

I recently bought this new t-shirt from this website and wore it to work one day last week.

One of the younger engineers was looking at it and commented 'Oh, I get it now'.

I said 'You know what kind of circuit this is, right?'

'No' was his answer.

'But you're an electrical engineer! Okay, here's the input' pointing to the schematic on my shirt 'and any signal that's input induces another voltage across the transformer, which in turn is used to bias this transistor since it's an NPN type and--OH MY GOD I AM SUCH A GEEK!!

'Yeah, you are!' he replied and laughed.

Going to the Source

Ahhhhh!! The pain!! Make it stop-PLEASE!!I heard about this latest warning from the FBI a few days ago and logged it away in my mind.

Then I see it again over at Michelle Malkin's blog and it occurred to me: why on Earth would Islamofascists want to target military recruiters? It just didn't make any sense, but then again nothing really makes sense when it's staring you right in the face.

And then it clicked: targeting military recruiters would (hopefully) cause more people to stay away from the recruitment offices and thus reduce the number of people entering military service.

The only reason I can come up with as to why recruiters would be targeted would be that military action is WORKING. This scum wouldn't waste the resources to just hit any random target - 7-Elevens around the country would garner more fear in the American public if one was bombed - they're going after the 'source' of the pain that they're experiencing.

They're in pain? Good.

Blast from the Past

I got a pleasant surprise this evening when someone left a comment in the 'Cat in a Bowl' post and it was from a good friend of mine that I served in the Navy with here in San Diego. We had lost contact with each other a few years back and he stumbled upon my quaint little blog.

The Timekeeper over at Horologium talks about issues with a slight Libertarian twist. Go check him out; I've always found him to have a keen intelligence and a unique perspective on topics that I'd never considered.

Uhhhh....Yeah

When I first read this, I thought it was something like a ScrappleFace parody:

Poopy PlanktonPlankton poo key to global warming

IN science the little things really do count. Just ask Tasmanian researcher Dr Karin Beaumont, who is making it her life's work to discover how the microscopic poo of tiny ocean organisms is affecting global climate change.

The minuscule zooplankton feed on ocean algae which, like all plants, use carbon dioxide to photosynthesise.

The carbon absorbed by the zooplankton is released in its faeces and if it floats to the surface it can be reabsorbed into the atmosphere and contribute to the greenhouse gases that cause global warming.

If it sinks to the bottom of the ocean it is locked up in sedimentary rock for thousands, if not millions, of years, keeping down the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere.

Now if you're still not convinced you care whether zooplankton drop sinkers or floaters you should know there are more than 1500 million tonnes of protozoa, a type of zooplankton, in the Southern Ocean alone.

Seems silly, but it's a legitimate article.

I don't know what is funnier: the idea of studying biology for years and years to study how plankton takes a crap or the reference to 'sinkers or floaters'...

More *cricket-cricket-cricket*

Ann Coulter has a new column out. Here's one portion that cannot be said any simplier:

Ann Coulter Kerry is demanding to be made president on the basis of spending four months in Vietnam 35 years ago. And yet the men who know what he did during those four months don't think he's fit to be dogcatcher. That seems newsworthy to me, but I must be wrong since the media have engineered a total blackout of the Swift Boat Veterans.

[...]

With their commitment to free speech and a robust exchange of ideas (i.e., "child pornography" and "sedition"), the Democratic National Committee is threatening to sue TV stations that run the Swift Boat Veterans' paid ads. Sue? Can you tell already that there are two lawyers at the top of the Democratic ticket? These are the same people who accuse John Ashcroft of shredding the Bill of Rights. WHY ISN'T THE PRESS COVERING THIS??? Wait, now I remember. OK, never mind. (Contribute to the Swift Boat Veterans here.)

Odds-N-Ends

  • Earlier today, while I was eating my lunch - nummy Lunchables Cracker Stackers - I was privileged to hear the sounds of another engineer eating something. Loudly. I was certain that if I peeked over the partition wall that I would be greated with a sight equal in repulsiveness to that of a anaconda eating a rabbit or someone jamming a Carl's Jr. burger into their gaping maw like there was no tomorrow. Actually, there practically one in the same.

  • As I expected - once I got a new cell phone and renewed my contract with AT&T Wireless, everyone that used to call me constantly suddenly fell off the planet.

  • My wife and daughter were on the 11 o'clock news last night on Channel 8 because they went out to the East County to watch the Perseid Meteor shower.

  • Nothing is funnier than watching two people accuse each other of being more of a fascist; it's like watching Chihuahuas growl at each other....

  • Also funny is seeing all of the 'Please Donate' pull-down menus at MoveOnPlease.org

Charles over at Little Green Footballs notes the deafening silence about a certain story:

A New York Times search for Cambodia: zero results related to John F. Kerry.

A Washington Post search for Cambodia: zero results.

Mainstream media are doing their best to consign the story of Kerry’s false Christmas in Cambodia to the memory hole. It's incredibly brazen and more than a little scary, as the press unites to ignore history.

Cheerleader Network News is also strangely silent about this.

The silence is about as deafening screams of anguish that came from the Islamic community here in the U.S. after 9/11.

Court Confirms the Obvious

Gee, this came out of nowhere:

Calif. Court Voids S.F. Same-Sex Marriages
SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - The California Supreme Court on Thursday voided the nearly 4,000 same-sex marriages sanctioned in San Francisco this year and ruled unanimously that the mayor overstepped his authority by issuing marriage licenses to gay and lesbian couples.
Well of course the mayor overstepped his authority. I mean, what idiot would think that the laws passed by the California Legislature and a YES vote on a proposition do not apply to their little slice of Earth?

It's not a question of whether or not gay marriage should be allowed - it's whether one public official has the legal and moral authority to usurp the wishes of the people of California and their elected officials.

The wishes of the citizens of California have spoken, both through an approval of Proposition 22 and through the continued electing & re-electing of their representatives to Sacramento.

Now the only problem is someone clueing Gavin Newsom in on this concept....

Man shot dead as bulletproof magic fails

Accra - A Ghanaian man was shot dead by a fellow villager while testing a magic spell designed to make him bulletproof, the official Ghana News Agency reported on Wednesday.

Aleobiga Aberima, 23, and around 15 other men from Lambu village, northeast Ghana, had asked a jujuman, or witchdoctor, to make them invincible to bullets.

After smearing his body with a concoction of herbs every day for two weeks, Aberima volunteered to be shot to check the spell had worked.

One of the others fetched a rifle and shot Aberima who died instantly from a single bullet.

Angry Lambu residents seized the jujuman and beat him severely until a village elder rescued him, the report added.

Tribal clashes are common in Ghana's far north, where people often resort to witchcraft in the hope of becoming invulnerable to bullets, swords and arrows. - Reuters

Reaction Speed

There has been a lot said about the manner in which President Bush 'reacted' to the news of the terrorist attacks of 9/11.

Many people critical of his lack of reaction have asserted that he must have known about the impending attacks since he didn't immediately jump up when told.

Chet over at The American Way!? points out an amazing coincidence in how people 'react' to such horrific news.

After waiting nine months, I finally got another bike yesterday.

My last bike was stolen from right in front of my apartment last December; if I think about it for a while, I get really pissed cause that bike was practically perfect.

This model - the 2004 Raleigh M20 - is the same model as the one that was stolen; the only 'bad' thing about it was that unless I took the bike in all black (yes, this photo is different), I would have to wait an unspecified amount of time for another color variant to be shipped in.

So now, I have new-found freedom from the UCSD Shuttle and it's pain-in-the-ass schedule.

Add a Clue - Stir

Why is Howard Dean such an asshat??

Yeeeeaaaaahhhhhh!"I am concerned that every time something happens that's not good for President Bush, he plays this trump card, which is terrorism," Dean told Wolf Blitzer on CNN's "Late Edition" yesterday. "It's just impossible to know how much of this is real and how much of this is politics, and I suspect there's some of both in it."
That exactly it Howie - the President is playing up the notion of people being murdered by Islamofascists simply because of a perceived falling in the polls.

This is exactly why you were determined to be 100% unsuitable for the office of President - because your Tin-Foil Hat™ is a little too tight.
