The Things You Find...

I was browsing through the articles of World Net Daily and was about to close it when I found a link to an article about travelling to Mars in 90 days. So I clicked on the link here.

University of Washington -- A new means of propelling spacecraft being developed at the University of Washington could dramatically cut the time needed for astronauts to travel to and from Mars and could make humans a permanent fixture in space.

In fact, with magnetized-beam plasma propulsion, or mag-beam, quick trips to distant parts of the solar system could become routine, said Robert Winglee, a UW Earth and space sciences professor who is leading the project.

Currently, using conventional technology and adjusting for the orbits of both the Earth and Mars around the sun, it would take astronauts about 2.5 years to travel to Mars, conduct their scientific mission and return.

"We're trying to get to Mars and back in 90 days," Winglee said. "Our philosophy is that, if it's going to take two-and-a-half years, the chances of a successful mission are pretty low."

Now, the practicality of this new propulsion is that it is YEARS away from being utilized, but it's still way cool.

What I discovered wasn't the news article, but the entire website called Red Nova which in itself is also way cool....

Happy Ramadan!

'Think you used enough dynamite there Butch?'

Iraqis search through the rubble of a destroyed house after U.S. warplanes pounded Fallujah.

Ramadan starting off with a bang in Fallujah:

Marines Pound Zarqawi Sites in Fallujah

BAGHDAD, Iraq — U.S. warplanes pounded the insurgent stronghold of Fallujah, where residents were marking the first day of the holy month of Ramadan on Friday, a day after city leaders suspended peace talks and rejected the Iraqi government's demands to turn over terror mastermind Abu Musab al-Zarqawi.

U.S. troops detained Fallujah's top negotiator in the peace talks, witnesses said. Khaled al-Jumeili, an Islamic cleric, was arrested as he left a mosque after prayers in a village about 10 miles south of Fallujah, they said. There was no immediate U.S. comment.

D'oh!

When you know your Democratic candidate just plain sucks ass and the election doesn't look good, there is always the 'tried & true' tactic of stealing signs.

Just hope you're not caught.

Welcome to the Club Hamas

It would seem that there is yet another group that thinks the United States is E-V-I-L:

Hamas designates the US "an enemy"

Hamas published a statement condemning the US and designating it as an enemy country after the US vetoed a resolution in the UN security council that would have unilaterally condemned Israeli military action against the group in the Gaza Strip.

The raids followed a series of rocket attacks on the southern town of Sderot, during which two Israeli toddlers were killed.

The United States vetoed a resolution condemning the Israeli military action against Hamas cells in the Gaza strip. U.S. Ambassador John Danforth cast the U.S. veto after British and German efforts to find compromise language failed.

"Once again, the resolution is lopsided and unbalanced," Danforth said, noting that the resolution made no mention of the launching of rockets from the Gaza strip at Israeli towns and cities.

In a press release in Arabic on its official web, Hamas leaders said: "Hamas is condemning the U.S vote and stating that Hamas considers the U.S as an enemy and as an accomplice to the Israeli enemy aggression against the Palestinians. Hamas regards the U.S position as a criminal act that puts her in a confrontation with "weak" nations. The U.S will face responsibility for its position as an accomplice with Israel to the animosity."

While I am not an expert on U.S. policy when dealing with groups such as Hamas, I can safely predict that if the Hamas leadership (the ones that are still alive) thinks that Israel is being mean & nasty when dealing with a homicide bomber, just wait and see how many big, smoking craters are created in Gaza should they decide to 'act' upon this new declaration.

Queen of Sting

Dispite what you might think about her on a personal level, Ann Coulter sure can sling 'em:

Republicans are more simple-minded, but for some things you want to be a little less contemplative, a little less nuanced. In a war against rabid savages trying to nuke Manhattan, you want a policy more along the lines of: Kill 'em! Republicans will shoot, burn, and bury the terrorists. Kerry will give them a speech.
Heh!

U.S. Navy's 229th Birthday

First U.S. Navy Jack

Establishment of the Navy, 13 October 1775

This resolution of the Continental Congress marked the establishment of what is now the United States Navy.

"Resolved, That a swift sailing vessel, to carry ten carriage guns, and a proportionable number of swivels, with eighty men, be fitted, with all possible despatch, for a cruise of three months, and that the commander be instructed to cruize eastward, for intercepting such transports as may be laden with warlike stores and other supplies for our enemies, and for such other purposes as the Congress shall direct.

That a Committee of three be appointed to prepare an estimate of the expence, and lay the same before the Congress, and to contract with proper persons to fit out the vessel.

Resolved, that another vessel be fitted out for the same purposes, and that the said committee report their opinion of a proper vessel, and also an estimate of the expence."

Comes in Threes?

First Rodney, now Ken & Christopher.

Double Bummer.

1996 NL MVP Ken Caminiti Dies at 41

NEW YORK — Ken Caminiti, the 1996 National League MVP who later admitted using steroids during his major league career, died Sunday. He was 41.

Caminiti died of a heart attack in the Bronx, said his agent-lawyer Rick Licht. The city medical examiner's office said an autopsy would be performed Monday, spokeswoman Ellen Borakove said.

"I'm still in shock," San Diego Padres general manager Kevin Towers said. "He was one of my favorite all-time players."

The three-time All-Star third baseman often was in trouble the last few years. His 15-year big league career ended in 2001, five seasons after he led the Padres to a division title and was a unanimous pick for MVP.

Dispite the crap happening to Ken lately, he was quite popular here in San Diego back when he was a Padre.
Actor Christopher Reeve Dead at 52

BEDFORD, NY — Christopher Reeve, the star of the "Superman" movies whose near-fatal riding accident nine years ago turned him into a worldwide advocate for spinal cord research, died Sunday of heart failure, his publicist said. He was 52.

Reeve fell into a coma Saturday after going into cardiac arrest while at his New York home, his publicist, Wesley Combs told The Associated Press by phone from Washington, D.C., on Sunday night.

Reeve was being treated at Northern Westchester Hospital for a pressure wound, a common complication for people living with paralysis. In the past week, the wound had become severely infected, resulting in a serious systemic infection.

Academic/Intellectual Honesty II

I posted something a few months ago about some of my daughter's school assignments.

She's in 5th grade now and she still has to do weekly assignments in her 'A to Z Journal' much like last year except that the letters are highlighting different countries around the planet instead of counties in California.

And as with last year's journal, she is tasked with decorating the borders of her weekly entries with drawings of things beginning with that weeks letter, i.e., for the letter C, she drew 'cat', 'cow', 'corn', etc.

This week, the letter is 'E' and one of the sub-topics she has to research is 'elephant', so I suggested this image.

As Whitney Houston sang (in between bong hits): '....teach the children and let them lead the way...'
