This weekend we're blessed with another three-day weekend. Most will be vacationing in other parts of the nation, some will be heading to the beach (where the weather permits) and some will simply be vegging on the couch.
Sadly, I was going to be one of those vegging and not really thinking about what Memorial Day means to Americans.
Last night I was privilidged to watch a dear friend of the family graduate from Southwestern College here in San Diego. At the beginning of the graduation ceremony, the Pledge of Allegiance was recited and was immediately followed by the singing of the National Anthem. The crowd stood and recited the Pledge and not one person omitted the portion of 'under God' - not one that I could hear. My father-in-law and his wife, like I did, put emphasis on that portion. And the young lady singing the National Anthem really put her heart and soul into her singing. It was inspiring.
Anyway, I was thinking about America and Memorial Day and decided this afternoon to do a little research on the topic.
Did you know that Memorial Day was originally designated to be on May 30th of every year? It was changed back in 1971 with the passage of the National Holiday Act of 1971 and it further diluted the meaning of honoring America's war dead into a bonanzza of sales and other trite crap.
Here is a site I found that has a whole lot more history and facts on Memorial Day, including a movement to change it back from the three-day weekend to May 30th.
This weekend while I cannot place flags on graves in Rosecrans Cemetery due to just being FUBARed from dialysis, I will hang my American flag from my balcony in spite of apartment regulations.
And I will remember those that have fallen in the defense of America, it's people, and the ideals for which America is the greatest nation on the face of the planet.
Comments on Memorial Day 2005
I remember when Memorial Day was on the 30th every year. It is my birthday, I was a Girl Scout, and every year I marched in the Memorial Day parade through our small town of Larchmont, N.Y. The year I remember the most is the year I got to carry the American flag. We had very specific rules as to how we could hold it. I was so proud. This Monday will be a rarity; Memorial Day falls on the real Memorial Day. My son will be marching in a Memorial Day parade himself. My family will be dropping him at the 'step off' point at 9am, and from there we will find our spot to watch them march by. At the conclusion of the parade route there will be a ceremony in the Memorial Cemetary. Not only will it bring back memories of my childhood, but it is wonderful to have something that helps me focus on why we even have this holiday. I think that's even more important now, while men and women of this country are dying to make freedom a reality to so many. I want to make sure that my kids never forget why there is a Memorial Day and what it really means.

Who Are You
Sitting here in the Sun God Lounge working on Control Systems homework and I found the gem of homework music in my music library: The Who. And the perfect song for Control systems?? Who Are You.
Pity though.....I can't blast it here so I have to just enjoy it on headphones and try not to sing along with Roger Daltry....

I woke up in a Soho doorway
A policeman knew my name
He said "You can go sleep at home tonight
If you can get up and walk away"
I staggered back to the underground
And the breeze blew back my hair
I remember throwin' punches around
And preachin' from my chair
Ah, except for never being in Soho, that was the storty of my life for a long long time...

Sucking Eggs
Air America Radio is finding out that you cannot simply get a few millionaires to back you and throw money at the radio to make an impression:
I occasionally tune in KLSD to hear the constant screech of crap from Air America Radio, mostly from Randi Rhodes. She seems to constantly be whining/screeching like she's just woken up from a nap and found her house full of armadillos.I've said it before and I'll say it again: you cannot just create an audience of radio listeners and expect to take off like a Saturn IIB rocket.
Ehh....they'll tank inside a year.

Moonbat Independence Day Celebration Planned
Oh dear God - this is why some protesters get their asses kicked by beefy WWII Marine veterans.
From those Fragile X folks at Indy Media:
Usually I don't have a problem with twerpy protesters burning a U.S. flag - it just shows that once again they cannot convey their argument(s) in a logical manner and have to take a few steps down the evolutionary ladder to grunt at the fire like so many chimps.I do have to say that burning the flag on July 4th is taking a whole bunch of steps down the ladder and quite honestly I'd have a few choice words to say should this happen in my presence. And considering how many people go out for Independence Day celebrations here in San Diego, it'll be almost like a swarm of bums on a bologna sandwich.
(Hat tip to Michelle Malkin - 13 e-mails and counting....)

|| Posted by Yogimus, May 27, 2005 02:41 AM ||I've always thought burning the flag was stupid except for the first few times it was done in the sixties, when it made an impact. All it does now is piss people off and close minds to what ever else might be said. It's also so... retro.

CTA - STFU!
Here's something that I posted about before - the increasing whine from the California Teacher's Association.
To me, it appears that the CTA is acting like a gold-digging tramp that got caught in bed with a high school basketball team - they're getting slightly viscious about what they're 'entitled' to in the end. They're still saying that Governor Schwarzenegger is 'robbing the children'.
And why is the teacher's union foaming-at-the-mouth and touting that 'children will suffer'?? It's because in reality the union will suffer and they won't admit that they'll have to gouge their union members with higher fees. From the Sac Bee:
I don't normally keep up with unions - they're mostly useless in the 21st century - but watch for indications of this.
These dorks need to STFU and work with what they've got instead of whining about what they don't have.
Comments on CTA - STFU!
I agree that unions seem to be less than useful nowadays, but if they weren't in existence, I think employers would run over employees with steamrollers. Some of the unions are corrupt, some are greedy, but I still think they are necessary.
|| Posted by Cait, May 24, 2005 11:09 AM ||Trouble with unions is that they don't stop existing once all their goals are met.
|| Posted by Yogimus, May 24, 2005 08:20 PM ||I think the biggest problem with unions is their lack of business perspective. Their entire focus is on the here-and-now and getting as much out of the company as they can.
As we have seen in the textile industry (do we even still have one here in the US?), the automobile industry, the steel industry, etc., unrealistic wage scales can be crippling. And not just to a single business, but to entire industries.
In Nor Cal, we have a battle coming up with our main regional transportation system, Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART). They have a projected $50 million deficit. What does the union want? Only an 18% pay raise, that's all!
Since this is a public entity, they'll probably just go the The Well (that's you and me) again, and raise taxes and fares. But the idea is the same: I don't give a shit about the long-term health of the company, I just want my money, NOW.
That attitude is biting the United Airlines retirees right in the ass, as they just lost virtually all of their pension funds when UA went into bankruptcy.
You reap what you sow....
|| Posted by The Other Mike S, May 26, 2005 08:09 AM ||The unions aren't the only cause of UA's problems. UA made record breaking profits in the late 90's, but stopped reporting their profits in the last few years. The unions represent the people, fellow Americans, who work for UA. Labor is always the easiest thing to blame and try to cut when a business starts claiming it's going bad. Other causes include the lease of the planes from GE, the cost of fuel, and interest payments on finance capital to Wall Street banks, among others (like, maybe, Glenn Tilton's 1.2 million a year? I wonder what his pension looks like). What's happening is that UA is looking to cut costs by dumping the pensions on the feds (you and me, in a sense). Rather than the other corporations re-negotiating with UA to lower the costs, (which would reduce their profits, but they won't starve), UA is going to trash it's employees (fellow American's) pensions, who won't starve either, but who will be in jeopardy of retirement poverty. Other airlines will see that this is a great way to increase profits, and other industries will follow. Pity the new bankruptcy laws didn't include this kind of thing, but just made it harder for people, fellow Americans, to get out from under.
The only attitude that's biting anybody in the ass is the Wal Mart attitude that says that Americans aren't worth anything when they work, and that if the only job they can get is working at Wal Mart then they deserve to be paid shit... yet (gotta do it) we're willing to dump 300 billion into Iraq.

Filibuster Whining
I haven't really addressed this situation much because I'm quite ambiguous about this 'nuclear option'. I understand the frustration that Republican senators have over trying to get a simple YES-NO vote; I've always thought that the Democrats would be excercising their 'voice' in a Senate vote.
And while I'm not certain about who is bending/breaking what Senate rules concerning judicial nominees, I do know that from my perspective that the Democrats are pulling the well-throw-a-sh*t-fit-if-we-dont-get-our-way ploy.
(Hat tip to Michelle Malkin even if she never replies to my e-mail)
Read More of "Filibuster Whining"And Michelle points out that those mental midgets over at The Daily *cough* Kos are ramping up to do...something stupid:
This makes me wonder exactly what they're gonna do once they get gathered. Whine? Protest? Riot?I'm half tempted to sign up for the event being pushed by those gems of civility at MoveON at Horton Plaze just to see what would/could happen. But as with most organized whining events, it is in the middle of the day when most people work; I'm guessing that these protesters can just work the late shift at Wendy's or the Thrifty Gas Station.
Then again, I've got better things to do like give my cats a bath.

Here's an article that an associate pointed out to me about how the left is starting to fracture. At least, here is one man's perspective of why he bailed on the 'progressive' movement:
Growing up with a radical liberal mother in the 80s, I remember hearing - constantly - about how President Reagan was going to start a war in Central America. And I believed it, so much that at one point I wrote a letter to President Reagan asking him to not start a war cause my older brother - who was in George Mason University at the time - would be drafted. I didn't want him drafted and killed Vietnam-style - yet another instance of CURRENT HOT-SPOT ON THE GLOBE vs. Vietnam argument that constantly fails to make sense. Read More of "Rats from the Sinking Ship"
I remember being bombarded by a constant stream of crap that Reagan would initiate World War III and I started planning on where to go when the CIA headquarters at Langely (two miles from my house in Virginia) was hit by the first salvo of ICBMs from the Soviet Union. I even joked to friends that if I had enough time that I'd go up on the roof of my building and slather up with tanning lotion so that I'd get a great tan.....for about 0.0034 seconds.
I even remember watching the CBS News with my mom and her constantly making comments about how Reagan was 'out for blood' when the air-traffic controllers went on strike. He's gonna get them all thrown in jail! she would say...and when I expressed a different opinion in her presence that she'd immediately (like most liberals) declare that this wasn't my opinion, but rather someone else's and I was mearly parroting it (in this case; it was my father's opinion which was held in contempt in my mother's house. This was my early exposure to an almost fanatical intolerance of differing ideas & thoughts when confronted with those on the left.
To this day my mother is convinced that the Patriot Act will get her thrown in jail because he talks smack about President Bush and those evil Republicans. And my being a Republican?? She asserts that is cause of the medications I take to control my blood pressure.....25 years later and she is still in denial that I have any notions of my own.
And of course it would take years of independent analysis to un-learn all of that crap, not to mention that as of this afternoon there haven't been any exchanges of ICBMs between the United States and Russia.
Yeah....the serious lack of bomb craters and radiation suits proved those theories wrong.
It's nice to see more and more people realizing that the typical anti-war/anti-Bush/Bushitler!! crowd is loosing people cause they're actually thinking about what's happening and giving it serious thought.

Growing up with a radical liberal mother in the 80s, I remember hearing - constantly - about how President Reagan was going to start a war in Central America.
Well, even though the US has a long history of supporting repressive dictators, paramilitary groups and terrorism within Latin America, you can't deny that under Reagan, the violence reached unprecedented levels. So the "war" characterization is not far off the mark.

|| Posted by Yogimus, May 23, 2005 08:18 PM ||If you are refering to Iraq, i feel you are off the mark. Iraq is not a quagmire, nor is it a Vietnam.
It is a low-intensity conflict that is being poorly managed and was for the most part a wholly unnecessary expenditure of military power. It is a slow drain on the resources of the US military and the economic resources of US itself- resources that could be be better used elsewhere, such as acting as the "stick" in US diplomacy elsewhere in the world.
US-backed death squads in Central America are anothre matter...
|| Posted by Blackglasses, May 23, 2005 10:46 PM ||...economic resources of US itself- resources that could be be better used elsewhere, such as acting as the "stick" in US diplomacy elsewhere in the world.
Ummm, this *is* the 'stick of U.S. diplomacy. The U.S. government decided what to do - the military is simply the tool in which U.S. diplomacy is strongly inserted into the world.
|| Posted by Mad Mikey, May 24, 2005 08:52 AM ||To properlly use the "carrot and stick" techinique, it would be best if the US government and military did not insert themselves into situations in which they are graudally sapped of strength and appear weaker than they really are.
Iraq would be a "stick" if it was managed properly and Saddam was in actuality the credible threat that the US presented him as.
As it stands, what was once percieved as the most powerful military force in the world now begins to look weaker as it loses control of large sections of the country to insurgents, faces a mounting death toll from a staggering number of terrorist attacks on civilian targets (which the military has been unable to effectively stop or even slow down, regardless of what their press releases say ) and is unable to secure symbolic targets which would, at the very least, bolster the perception of US military might (such as the road from the airport to downtown Baghdad)
But going back to the topic at hand, Reagan did do some bad stuff...
|| Posted by Blackglasses, May 24, 2005 09:14 AM ||Well, actually we did invade Central America. In 1983, Reagan sent troops to Grenada, which is considered part of Central American/The Caribbean.
|| Posted by Cait, May 24, 2005 11:22 AM ||Mikey, your mom and my husband's mother are a pair. Except he doesn't take "mind-altering medication" for her to blame. I guess that makes it my fault...
|| Posted by caltechgirl, May 24, 2005 11:32 AM ||Cait: You're right about Panama, but I was talking about a multi-nation invasion/subjugation/exploitation type of war.
Some would think that we did that what with attempting to change Nicaragua from communism but the notion was that it would be a HUGE war engulfing all of Central America.
CTG: Oh, my wife gets 'the treatment'....I'm almost willing to be money that (in her mind) my kidney disease is a DIRECT result of my wife's cooking....
|| Posted by Mad Mikey, May 24, 2005 04:26 PM ||I strongly believe that "smart" munitions should be used ONLY on high risk targets. Carpetbomb everything else.
|| Posted by Yogimus, May 27, 2005 02:45 AM ||how the left is starting to fracture
Starting? The left's biggest problem is that it is so fractured. I swear to god there's nothing more frustrating than being at a small rally where everyone in the room thinks he or she is the most important, smartest, most qualified, has the most important agenda or the most worthy cause. Even big rallies it's Stop the War In Iraq and Everywhere and Don't Eat Meat or Drink Subsidised Milk or Listen to Country Music Everywhere.
I mean I'm an arrogant egomaniacal prick, but jeesus, even I can can it when I have to.

Don't Go in Public
Michelle Malkin points out the down-side to wearing a Star Wars costume in public.
She advises readers to not drink anything while viewing these....superior examples of Western culture.
(Sadly, I must admit to wearing a Star Trek uniform to a couple of comic book conventions back in the early-90s)
Especially this shot. Or this one. Or especially this one.

Beyond Wiped
Went up to Disneyland yesterday as a chaperone for my daughter's Girl Scout troop and I am beyond wiped/dead.
It always amazes me that 10-year old girls have that much energy! We started out in the park around 8:30 am and I was just stone-cold dead-on-my-feet by 10:00 am! And by 7:00 pm....well, not even crack cocaine would have revived me.
The nice part is that even though it was a recipe for crankiness with the temperatre being on the H-O-T side and all the walking we did, all of the girls were extremely well-behaved (as they typically are) and everyone had a great time.
I took some great photos of the park and of the troop; I might post some this coming week....if I recover that is.
Word of Advice: if you go to Disneyland with a big group (or even a small one), designate one person to be the FASTPASS runner. One of the troop leaders would constantly sprint away and get FASTPASS tickets for the really busy rides and they enabled us to avoid at least an hour of waiting in the broiling sun. They are indeed worth the effort to get them in advance!
