"I'm forever indebted to this young man for this gift," said Phyllis Klingebiel, 68, of the foster son who lived with her and her husband for 11 years. "He's a walking angel on this Earth."
Navy petty officer 2nd class Mark Greshan, 23, said the donation was a natural choice for a woman who cared for him from the time he showed up at the house as a 7-year-old.
"After six months, I knew this was my home," he told The Star-Ledger of Newark in an interview before the operation. "It wasn't 'foster child,' it was 'son."'
Klingebiel needed a transplant after a genetic kidney condition worsened in the last year. Matches from biological family members were not available.
"He called me up and said, 'I have a Christmas gift for you,"' Phyllis Klingebiel said. "'The bad news is that it's going to be early. The good news is that you're going to get my kidney."'
Herbert Klingebiel thinks of Greshan's donation as a reward for his wife's work with children. Over the past 30 years, the Klingebiels have tended to 67 foster children.
"God gives everybody a gift, and I guess her gift is helping children," he said. "I guess this just came around and God gave it back hundredfold, back to my wife."
Their operations were Tuesday, and Greshan, who received some time off from the Navy, is recuperating at home.
He said Saturday he was sore from the operation but was OK. He was waiting to hear whether his foster mother would be able to leave the hospital and join him at their home.
"Everybody's doing fine," he told The Associated Press.
that did it. Boo-YAH!

My friend Elly dropped by last night right as I got home from dialysis - she brought presents for the family and my present was ultimately cool: a Pilot Serrated knife made by Buck Knives.
I had been without a pocket knife for a while since I lost my last one - most likely at dialysis. This one is beyond cool - very solid construction, the blade is semi-locked in place when folded (no accidental openings) and it's just beyond cool.
Nothing says 'Christmas' like someone getting you something that you'll not only appreciate but use daily.

Of Vomit and News
Spent another six hours in Urgent Care last night and almost got admitted for this sinus infection that's kicking my ass. Three-plus weeks of migrain headaches and enough nausea to power a tug boat....just wonderful.
Since I'm not in pain or puking for the moment, here are a few interesting items I've spotted in the news.
Enjoy!

Weasel Time
H.RES.579
Title: Expressing the sense of the House of Representatives that the symbols and traditions of Christmas should be protected for those who celebrate Christmas.
RESOLUTION
Expressing the sense of the House of Representatives that the symbols and traditions of Christmas should be protected.
Whereas Christmas is a national holiday celebrated on December 25; and
Whereas the Framers intended that the First Amendment to the Constitution of the United States would prohibit the establishment of religion, not prohibit any mention of religion or reference to God in civic dialog: Now, therefore, be it
Resolved, That the House of Representatives --
- recognizes the importance of the symbols and traditions of Christmas ;
- strongly disapproves of attempts to ban references to Christmas ; and
- expresses support for the use of these symbols and traditions.

I thought anyone could celebrate whatever the hell they wanted to. Merry Chrishannukwanzaa already.
Why is anyone wasting time on this stupid stuff at all?
|| Posted by Snarklander, December 21, 2005 11:50 AM ||It is funny that the only ones wasting so much breathe and time on this are the conservatives themselves. Just because a few fringe liberals don't like christmas in the mainstream does not mean the rest of the left thinks that way. It is one of the extreme views of the very extreme left that the conservatives are capitalizing on and diverting attention away from their gift horse whose administration happens to be falling apart with scandal, lies, and now even breaking the law that Bush himself has even been quoted in a speech saying that warrants are needed for wiretaps.
It is the same old story with the conservtives - spin spin spin and divert attention. Nothing ever changes with them, that is why they are conservative.

Exsqueeze Me?
Hmmm....maybe they could also get those same Mexicans to denounce violations of a nation's sovereign borders.
When I initiially saw the headline I was wondering What - they're going to NOT cross the border to get back at American business? No such luck.
I remember the *cough* threats of Mexicans boycotting businesses here in San Diego right around when Prop 187 was being discussed; the 'word-on-the-street' was that if 187 passed that many, many, MANY Mexicans would not cross the border to do Christmas shopping.
Well....Prop 187 passed and the Mexicans still came to but Christmas stuff for their kids. So much for getting a spine of some sort to fight 'racism' & 'inposing a wall of hate'.
Keep whining Mexico - it makes for interesting headlines.

Boo-F-in Hoo! Why does Vicente Fox have any sort of credibility on this or any other issue?
I think putting up a hotwire on the fence would be an approved upgrade! Keep the cattle on their side of the fence!
I saw a "story" on the news tool 60 minutes, that started detailing how much we were paying for all of our efforts to keep the Southern border secure, and how much of a waste of money it was!
|| Posted by Tetzman, December 20, 2005 01:49 PM ||Pretty sad!
All violations of illegal immigrant rights can be reported to INS. Please call 555-5555 with your grievences. Have home phone and address ready. A representative will meet you shortly.
|| Posted by Yogimus, December 21, 2005 08:19 AM ||WTF?! Denounce "rights violations"? ROTFLMAO!
I like Tetzman's idea of a hot wire. "I've got your rights violation swingin' right here...."
|| Posted by The Other Mike S, December 22, 2005 12:02 PM ||The pro-illegal immigration crowd, which obviously includes the Mexican gov't, has a way with spinning the anti-illegal immigration argument into anti-immigration, period. As if it's the same thing. The verbiage of this story (and many stories on this subject) alternately make me want to laugh and cry.
I remember when Vicente Fox was elected, and all the optimism that came with the prospects of a "businessman" running the show down there. Now he's just as lazy as his predecessors in fixing the issues that drive his people to cross the border. It's so much easier to blame America!

Random Thoughts
Just thought I'd post something inane to use the new graphic that I've imported from All Free Backgrounds.
Been sick for the last two weeks - got the 'creeping crud' from someone...
Got Christmas stuff all set up in the house....now I just have to populate the bottom of it with presents, i.e., still have to do Christmas shopping and I'm seriously not looking forward to it.
Does anyone know how to get a mini-photo/graphic to 'pop up' when you move your mouse over a segment of text? Go check out Yahoo News to see what I'm talking about....
Going to go to dialysis now - it sucks ass, but it is a method to keep my butt alive.
Read More of "Random Thoughts"UPDATE: Well, I knew that today was going to be memorable - as soon as I left work, I had to drive directly to Urgent Care/Emergency. It would seem that my 'sinus infection' wasn't being contained with the anti-biotics that were given to me last week.
I won't go into the oh-so-lovely details, but I spent about six hours in Urgent Care and got two different anti-biotics pumped into me intravenously along with some morphine.
So, the moral of this story is: if you think you've got a bad time this Christmas, take a look at how often you go to Urgent Care in any given week like me....you'll feel much better about your situation almost instantly.

Post Christmas Pary Report
We had a Christmas party last night.
Almost all of the invited guests showed up and that's good considering that I made the invitation calls just five days in advance.
My wife put out a spread of food that was quite frankly too much.
A group of us and guests went Christmas carolling at a retirement home in downtown La Jolla. Even if we didn't sing that great, the people that came out of their rooms were all wearing smiles.
Our guests had a great time - I say great because we had one couple leave to go to a San Diego Gulls hockey game and returned later. Additionally, most people stayed until 4:00 am - I had gone to bed around midnight cause I wasn't feeling too hot.
I was a sucess because everyone was drinking and having a great time chatting with our other guests; everyone was invited to a New Year's bash that the Mad Mikey family was going to attend.....my wife told some of the guests about the long process of my trying to get a kidney transplant (I usually don't spout off about my medical problems to everyone I meet....too much to tell and I don't like 'whining' about it. But the end result is that three of our guests are going to make initial inquires about being possible donors.
The only ones who didn't enjoy the party were my cats: they hid under our bed all night.
My wife also made some new business contacts - mostly mutual friends of some of the guests that are looking for some sort of insurance. Still: networking is networking.
So today, the entire family is going into 'lazy bum' mode. We'll mostly sit around and veg out - the wife and kid are going to snuggy up our bed and watch a DVD on my notebook. Hell, even the cats are going into 'lazy bum' mose.
And me? I'll probably get all propped up in my 'comfy chair' and watch some Sci Fi Channel or maybe something on the History Channel - stuff that the rest of the family consider 'boring'....

See! It does pay to advertise!
Don't think about advertising your condition as whining! Encourage Organ Donation wherever/when ever you can!
I wish you well my friend! I hope at least one of those 3 folks is compatible in some way. Don't let the zero point match thing scare you off either. A living donor is the most successful, and best way to go!
|| Posted by Tetzman, December 19, 2005 08:19 AM ||Merry Christmas!
Jim
Seriously though, educate us:
What does it take in order to get a donor kidney? What sort of stuff has to match? Write an entry about it, wouldja? Because until it happens to us, we'll never find out.
Thanks and good luck.
