Don't Tease the Lion

Not a good time to rely upon that shatterproof glass cage to save you...

UPDATE: I guess this qualifies for Cat Blogging Friday!

UPDATE II: I had to substitute this photo because it was being hotlinked by some assknobs here.

It took me a little while to find this post - I guess I initially did it on one of those days where there wasn't much to blog about......I'd usually look through the YahooNews photos to find something usually funny like this lion snearing at the man through the window.

Dependence on Foreign Oil Continues

Oh, by all means let's continue our additiction to foreign oil. Dipsticks.

House Votes to Keep Offshore Drilling Ban

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Despite talk of an energy crisis and the need for independence from foreign oil, Congress seems to be in no mood to open more of the country's coastal waters to energy development.

The House late Thursday rejected an attempt to end the quarter-century ban on oil and natural gas drilling that has been in effect for 85 percent of the country's coastal waters from Alaska to New England despite arguments that new supplies are needed to lower energy costs.

Well, I can some-what understand that.....fear from having oil rigs right off the coast and the constant quasi-threat of an oil spill.

But just like when a proposal to build a new refinery comes up - everyone instantly freaks out and kills the idea in true NIMBYism.

Here's hoping that should the price of oil jump suddenly and were facing $5 per gallon that these House members remember this vote and maybe also that their supporters can't fork over big donations cause they're taking out a second mortgage to fill their gas tanks.

USS Oriskany Becomes a Reef

This is never an easy thing to watch - especially if its your ship that's being made into an artificial reef:

Aircraft Carrier Sunk in Gulf of Mexico

IN THE GULF OF MEXICO - As hundreds of veterans looked on solemnly, the Navy blew holes in a retired aircraft carrier and sent the 888-foot USS Oriskany to the bottom of the sea Wednesday, creating the world's largest manmade reef.

The rusted hulk took 37 minutes to slip beneath the waves, about 4 1/2 hours faster than predicted, after more than 500 pounds of plastic explosives went off with bright flashes of light and clouds of brown and gray smoke.

Korean and Vietnam War veterans aboard a flotilla of 300 charter boats watched from beyond a one-mile safety perimeter as the "Mighty O" went down in 212 feet of water, about 24 miles off Pensacola Beach.

Lloyd Quiter of North Collins, N.Y., who served four tours on the ship in Vietnam, played the attention-all-hands signal on his boatswain's pipe, and wept.

"I'm a little stunned. It's a little hard to take," he said.

After the blasts, an acrid smell hung in the air near the ship. The carrier went down stern first, the bow lifting up into the air and creating a giant spray of water as it came down. The blue ocean churned a foamy white as the deck — bright orange with rust — slid under. Hundreds of surrounding boats blew their horns in tribute.

Shaking & Quaking

Should the West be 'quaking in its boots'?

Abbas warns of Palestinian anger "explosion" on aid

STRASBOURG, France, May 16 (Reuters) - President Mahmoud Abbas warned on Tuesday of an "explosion of anger" among Palestinians if international donors did not move fast to restore aid cut off in recent weeks.

International donors including the European Union and the United States have suspended aid to the Palestinian Authority because of the Hamas-led government's failure to renounce violence and recognise Israel since coming to power in March.

The EU, the Palestinians' largest donor, has been charged with coming up with a way of restarting aid for the most urgent needs while bypassing Hamas officials. But the EU acknowledges it could take weeks to get a new aid mechanism working.

"Life will be frozen and there will be an explosion of anger and this would lead to a chaotic situation of which we cannot forsee the results," Abbas told a news conference after a speech to the European Parliament in the French city of Strasbourg.

What'll they do if *cough* aid isn't restored? Fire some more rockets into Israel? Send some more homicide bombers to kill innocent civilians? Burn some more flags?

Talk about a tiny kitten getting all puffed up....

UPDATE: It would seem that the Palestinians are serious in their anger. Beware the kitten with claws:

Aksa Brigades threatens US, Europe

The Aksa Martyrs Brigades, the armed wing of Fatah, on Monday threatened to strike at US and European interests in response to international sanctions on the Palestinian Authority.

The threat, the first of its kind, came as PA Chairman Mahmoud Abbas was scheduled to hold talks in Moscow with President Vladimir Putin on the severe financial crisis in the PA territories. Moreover, the threat by Abbas's Fatah party came as Palestinians marked the 58th anniversary of the nakba, or catastrophe (the secular anniversary of Israel's independence).

"We won't remain idle in the face of the siege imposed on the Palestinian people by Israel, the US and other countries," said a leaflet issued by the Aksa Martyrs Brigades in the Gaza Strip. "We will strike at the economic and civilian interests of these countries, here and abroad."

The leaflet added: "Let the entire world know that we won't succumb in the face of the policy of blackmail, siege and starvation. In the past we did not capitulate in the face of the policy of assassinations, detentions and air raids."

Well, I'm guessing that this means that the Palestinians are serious and that we'd better bow to the threat of homicide bombers killing innocent civilians humanitarian need and send them millions billions in *cough* humanitarian aid.

Oh please.....would someone tell the Palestinians about the dangers of huffing industrial cleaning agents?

Hotlinking Assknobs

Rob over at Left & Right has been having trouble with assknobs stealing his bandwidth by 'hotlinking' photos from his site.

Well, Rob dealt with the problem in a manner that is fitting and I too have taken to utilizing his method.

If you're one of the assknobs from MySpace that came back wondering why those photos you've glommed onto have changed, then here's your one warning:

Take the offending HTML code off your site immediately or you'll find gay porn there.

Here's one of those asshats and the 'updated' image (about half-way down the page listed under 'Heroes'.....

Here's another assknob - and this clown cannot even insert the HTML code correctly! What a moron....

Comprehensive? Doh!

From CNN:

President Bush's Comprehensive Immigration Plan

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- During a prime time address from the Oval Office Monday evening, President Bush offered a series of proposals that includes measures meant to please those calling for a crack-down on illegal immigration as well as those concerned about the fate of the the roughly 12 million illegal immigrants currently in the country.

The president's initiatives include:

  • Strengthen the Border Patrol by 6,000 new officers by 2008 and deploy new technology, such as infrared cameras and unmanned aerial drones.

  • Deploy up to 6,000 National Guardsmen to the border to support the Border Patrol for up to one year. The guardsmen would be involved in gathering intelligence and building fences and patrol roads, not in the apprehension and detention of illegal immigrants.

  • End the "catch and release" policy that frees those caught illegally in the U.S. with the usually-ignored order to appear at a later date for deportation. The president said he wants to expand detention facilities to increase the numbers of detainees that can be held before being deported.

  • Creates a temporary worker program that would match willing workers with employers and require those workers to return to their home countries after a "limited period of time."

  • Create a tamper-proof identification card with biometric information, such as digital fingerprints, for legal foreign-born workers to improve employers' ability to verify a worker's legal status.

  • Launch a program that would allow illegal immigrants already in the U.S. to achieve citizenship after they pay a penalty, pay taxes, learn English and work at a job for a number of years. The president specifically rejected critics that called such a program "amnesty."
All of this amounts to a 10 lb bag of cricket crap from Dicker & Dicker of Beverely Hills.

What really boggles me about the administration's approach to dealing with border security is that it would seem that even if there were 15 people standing on the President's desk and screaming until they were blue-in-the-face and they'd still not listen.

I'm guessing that come November the American people will make their disgust known and it'll hurt the GOP. And they'll have no one to blame except themselves.

UPDATE: And of course, Mexico reacts in a spaz-like manner:

Mexico Threatens Suits Over Guard Patrols

Mexico said Tuesday that it would file lawsuits in U.S. courts if National Guard troops on the border become directly involved in detaining migrants.

Mexican border officials also said they worried that sending troops to heavily trafficked regions would push illegal migrants into more perilous areas of the U.S.-Mexican border to avoid detection.

Yes indeed - they might take some sort of action like.....nothing.

Flag Desecration at UCSD

This letter appered in this Monday's issue of The Guardian which is UCSD's student newspaper. And it floored me:

Classroom Flag Desecration Lacks Value

Dear Editor:

On April 10, professor Richard Biernacki brought an American flag to his Sociology 20 class and desecrated it in an attempt to prove to his students that people hold profound attachments to symbols. Biernacki cut the flag up with a knife and then smeared the flag with mud. Sadly, these actions were an improvement from last year, when he disgustingly used dog excrement in place of mud.

Looking back to when I started class this year, I naively believed in the good in people and so did not fear a recurrence of this demonstration. After the discussion brought on by Biernacki’s demonstration last year, in which many of his students, often nearly silenced by tears, told Biernacki how much his experiment had hurt them, I could not believe Biernacki would have the heartlessness to cause a new batch of students such anguish. My belief in Biernacki’s natural goodness was callously disproved.

Stunningly, Biernacki had the nerve to say repeatedly that he did not intend to hurt people, and he was simply trying to prove a point. These are contradictory statements. If he destroyed the flag and no one felt pain, his point would remain unproven. If no one were offended or hurt by Biernacki’s demonstration, then the entire demonstration would be pointless. Biernacki’s intention, whether he likes to admit it or not, is to inflict pain on his students.

I stood up in class and told Biernacki to stop because I thought there was a way to make the point in a less offensive way. I was greeted with major opposition from the class. Since the majority of the class did not feel as I did, if Biernacki truly had the intention of proving a point about symbolism, he should have come up with a symbol to desecrate that would elicit a negative reaction from everyone.

During the discussion following Biernacki’s demonstration this year, one woman stated that she felt his actions were useful in that they proved the values for which the flag stands. Her point was that Biernacki, as an American, is free to do whatever he wishes to the flag. What she forgot to mention is vitally important. The rights we hold as Americans come with the responsibility to use them wisely. As has been quoted many times, “Just because you can does not mean you should.” Biernacki has the right to do whatever he wants to the flag, but that does not make whatever he does to the flag right. Similarly, Biernacki can cause his students pain and suffering, but does that mean that he should?

Though Biernacki stated that it was hard for him to do this demonstration, he does not have the attachment to the flag that he was supposedly attempting to portray. If he had that attachment, the kind that comes from spending sleepless nights worrying about a little brother fighting half a world away, or from opening the door to your house and hearing the dreaded words, “Your son died for his country,” he would not have been able to desecrate the flag. I have two people that I love in the military right now, and what Biernacki did felt like a sucker punch to the gut for me.

Biernacki has his own lesson to learn. He needs to learn compassion and empathy, and to be mature enough to take other people’s feelings into consideration when he acts. Hopefully, this letter will be more effective at teaching than he is.

Thurgood Marshall College Junior

I hadn't heard about this professor desecrating the American flag last year nor recently until I read this letter.

I personally do not like seeing this happen and YES, I am aware that it's legal to do this childish stunt because of 'freedom of speech'. However, IMHO when someone resorts to desecrating an American flag it is only because they cannot formulate a decent argument. And like a child resorting to throwing a temper tantrum, they de-evolve into a primate-type intellect and do this.

I know that I'll never have to take a class with this Sociology clown of a professor and that's fine by me as I probably would learn nothing from sitting there watching someone who is supposedly educated act like a rogue chimpanzee screaching and flinging its poo around its cage.

And the other sad part of this is that these kids were compelled to sit there and observe it out of fear of failing the class.

Yup - nothing says teaching like a captive audience.....

Here is Biernacki's website at UCSD.

Speechless

This left me utterly speechless:

2 charged with rape of newborn

McKenzie police have charged two Carroll County parents with raping their child.

Jonathan Wayne Goodrum, 19, and Kristina Louise Sawyer, 18, are charged with raping their 1-day-old girl before she was taken home from McKenzie Regional Hospital about six weeks ago, said McKenzie Police Lt. Tim Nanney.

While both parents have been charged, Sawyer's bond was reduced because police still are investigating what role, if any, she played in the possible rape of her child, Nanney said. She was charged because "I could not exclude her from being part of it, so I had to charge her also," he said. "I could not exclude her at the time from being a participant of it."

I know they've only been indicted and they're 'innocent until proven guilty', but I am just speechless. What sort of a man would ingage in such behavior - especially with a newborn baby? And what sort of woman would condone this when her own child is involved?

I can only hope that they are both found guilty and sent to prison for life. A life sentence served while living in the general prison population would be the only fitting punishment.
