Oh, by all means let's continue our additiction to foreign oil. Dipsticks.
House Votes to Keep Offshore Drilling BanWell, I can some-what understand that.....fear from having oil rigs right off the coast and the constant quasi-threat of an oil spill.WASHINGTON (AP) -- Despite talk of an energy crisis and the need for independence from foreign oil, Congress seems to be in no mood to open more of the country's coastal waters to energy development.
The House late Thursday rejected an attempt to end the quarter-century ban on oil and natural gas drilling that has been in effect for 85 percent of the country's coastal waters from Alaska to New England despite arguments that new supplies are needed to lower energy costs.
But just like when a proposal to build a new refinery comes up - everyone instantly freaks out and kills the idea in true NIMBYism.
Here's hoping that should the price of oil jump suddenly and were facing $5 per gallon that these House members remember this vote and maybe also that their supporters can't fork over big donations cause they're taking out a second mortgage to fill their gas tanks.

consider the situation right now - the voting public is in a very amenable mood to setting up oil derricks all over the place, but the incumbents still won't take the bait. they have to be getting pressure - big pressure - from people who have no interest in seeing the price of oil or gas fall.
to put it another way: Why would Exxon WANT to re-invest their profits in new operations off the coast? it's a lot easier to pay politicians to 'restrict' their operations - and that of any potential competitors - than it is to re-construct all the platforms they tore down 25 years ago.

|| Posted by nunya, May 20, 2006 12:28 PM ||You guys seem to have one idea right - it is all because the oil companies profit from it.
Why would they want to do something as silly as washing the tanks out, filling it with ethanol or an ethanol-petrol mix while they build in the hydrogen tanks and pumps? Yes, why would we do something silly like that? As long as there 10bil a quarter profits to be made, there will be oil and there will be war over it.
Nunya,
You're right - ethanol would be the way to go....especially after Brazil has made it appear to work.
I say 'appear' as while Brazil's sucess seems solid, I'm no expert on the long-term implications of ethanol use versus gasoline.
The problem is what you've said: too much profit to be made in oil; America's energy 'economy' would get.....'raped' (for lack of a better phrase) if we tried to quickly switch to alternatives to oil.
It'll take something massive to get the ball rolling in that direction and providing that the equivalent ethanol price per gallon isn't something insane like $6.00 a gallon, I'll embrace it and switch over myself.
