This is beyond stupid:
US stars align in anti-Iraq war hunger strikeBut what is just......typical of Hollywood is this:Star Hollywood actor-activists including Sean Penn and Susan Sarandon and anti-war campaigners led by bereaved mother Cindy Sheehan plan to launch a hunger strike, demanding the immediate return of US troops from Iraq.
As Americans get set to fire up barbeques in patriotic celebration of US Independence Day on July 4, anti-war protestors planned to [savor] a last meal outside the White House, before embarking on a 'Troops Home Fast' at midnight.
"We've marched, held vigils, lobbied Congress, camped out at Bush's ranch, we've even gone to jail, now it's time to do more," said Sheehan, who emerged as an anti-war icon after losing her 24-year-old son Casey in Iraq.
The hunger strike was the latest bid by the US anti-war movement to grab hold of American public opinion, after numerous marches, vigils and political campaigns.
Other supporters, including Penn, Sarandon, novelist Alice Walker and actor Danny Glover will join a 'rolling" fast, a relay in which 2,700 activists pledge to refuse food for at least 24 hours, and then hand over to a comrade. Now that is dedication to a cause......a rolling hunger strike......cause it's understandable how a hunger strike can interfere with having a fabulous dinner at some swank restaurant where you haver to be 'seen'.
I think that all of these Hollywood activists attention-seekers have just remanded themselves to the 'Pet Rock' category of silliness.

Yep, just finished up a couple beef-n-bean burritos from the deli at Giant.
Tasty.
Pretty soon my ass will be letting Hollywood know what I think of them.
|| Posted by Rob@L&R, July 5, 2006 09:44 AM ||It is their right to protest in any legal way they choose. If they are against the war, they have to freedom to say so publicly. And I have the right to never contribute a dime to the livelihood of any of these twits again. That has been my practice for the last several years. The only way we can make our displeasure felt is by hitting them where it counts, in the numbers and in the pocketbook. I will not go to ANY movie in which any of these fools has a part. I will not rent any video or even watch on TV anything in which any of these buffoons has a part. In fact, there are so many actors on my shit list, it sometimes gets tough to find a movie to watch. But, that's what it takes to get the point across. It's called freedom of choice, and when added to capitalism, it's a powerful message. Try it.

The 'down' side to that (at least in my case) is that while *I* might not choose to see any of these moron's movies, it has an unforeseen impact: my kid misses out on some of those movies.
In one case that comes to mind: Johnny Depp and the soon-to-be-released 'Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest'. My kid has been waiting for this movie to come out and we're not gonna disappoint her.
For me, it's a hard process to not bring to mind some of the more inane comments that some of these stars have muttered while watching anything they're in and it's more difficult to rectify my personal feelings about these people when deciding what movie to take my daughter to; I vowed long ago to not place what I'd deem 'not worth seeing' on my kid - just like I'd never *make* my kid attend a Protest Warrior event.
As far as Susan Sarandon is concerned - she's off my list and luckily, she isn't in any Disney movie that I'm aware of, so I don't have to worry about attempting to tell my kid "No honey, we're not going to see such-n-such a movie cause so-and-so is starring in it".

That is just the sort of protest that the majority of our couch-potato, do-nothing society can really "sink it's teeth into" (but not during their 24-hour pity-fest). Who do theseheadline-grabbing "stars" think they are fooling?? While our people are fighting and dying to attemt to insure a safer world for them, all they can thing is "How can I tweak this war to get myself into the public eye??" You will also note that the vast majority of these "stars" are pretty well washed-up actors who have no other way to keep their faces in front of the camera. I wish "natural selection" worked in Hollywood...
P.S. Mikey... I hope you have recovered from our little vacation to L.A...
|| Posted by sturgesbob, July 7, 2006 03:40 AM ||Keep your eyes out for the "Rolling Pig-out". An effort dedicated to showing support for our people in the fight against terrorists (etc.) by having a good, hearty meal. If my anti-depressent wasn't such a good appetite suppressor I'd take part. I do plan on having a pan-baked steak in a few hours.
Chow down for freedom!
