I've seen this over the last few days and have been debating as to whether I should comment on Richard's superb lack of finesse; this appears to be another 'Butt Monkey Launch':
'Law & Order' actor: I know more about war than troopsAs I mention in my little sidebar on the right-hand side called 'About Me', I point out that getting offended here in the U.S. isn't a right that's guarenteed under the Bill of Rights and this is where my own words come back to haunt me: I can't really get bent out of shape because of putz from Hollywood comes across like he's a genius as compared to us dumb 19 or 20 year olds that couldn't get a job and joined the military instead.According to actor and comedian Richard Belzer, American troops in Iraq and Afghanistan are too uneducated to be expressing support for the U.S. military mission since they're just "19 and 20-year-old kids who couldn't get a job" and "they don't read twenty newspapers a day."
Belzer, who's best known as Detective John Munch on NBC's "Homicide: Life on the Street" and "Law & Order: Special Victim's Unit," is a frequent guest on HBO's "Real Time with Bill Maher." On one previous appearance, he threatened to walk off the set when told columnist Ann Coulter was also appearing, calling her a "fascist party doll." On Friday night's live broadcast, Belzer attacked claims by fellow guest Florida Congresswoman Ileanna Ros-Lehtinen's that U.S. soldiers continue to express support for the war.
In the lively exchange, captured by the website NewsBusters, Belzer dismisses Ros-Lehtinen accounts of meeting with troops in Iraq and their credibility as "bull----."
Richard, you're a decent actor and a comic, but you might want to walk a mile or two in ourshoes/boots before you start bloviating. You're just another example of why people get tired of the Hollywood nimrods that seem to think that because you're able to portray a character on the small or big screen that it gives you gravitas to make such broad statements about the caliber of people in the American military. I enlisted 20 years ago not because I didn't have any options in front of me - I wanted to serve my country.
In other words Dick: Step the F*ck Off!

I like all of the Law & Order series. Your post harkens back to a bok title I heard of, called "Shut Up & Sing!", by Laura Ingram.
Belz, STFU and ACT!

My brother in law joined the marines at 17 because they wouldn't take him earlier and that's what he wanted to do. The guy is pretty smart, I mean he graduated highschool at 14...
My dad joined the airforce after having numerous good jobs, because he wanted to serve his country, not to mention that the air force offers some of the best opportunities to get into a technical field around.
I have yet to meet the stereotypical "dumb grunt" military man.
Hell, one of my good friends up here is a graphic artist, holds one or two bachelors degrees, but he is still in the service because he loves his country, and he tells me that he has a blast doing the things that they do.
I learned long ago that "dumb 19 & 20 year olds" were way smarter than those dumbasses in hollywood.

|| Posted by Cait, March 21, 2006 03:01 PM ||Nice to see you haven't lost your inimitable "touch"...
Butt-munch indeed! And worse.
Props to Congresswoman Ros-Lehtinen for trying to go toe to toe with him!
|| Posted by caltechgirl, March 21, 2006 03:26 PM ||I mock the stupidity which is he.
|| Posted by Yogimus, March 21, 2006 03:28 PM ||Well stated. Nice blog, too.
